TV coverage

I hope you're sitting down when you read this - it's COLOUR.

The couple I bought my apartment off in 2011 were retiring to Alicante and left literally everything,

I moved into a fully-furnished show home of a place with everything I could possibly need.

14 years later, most of it is still intact, but the flat screen TV which is either FreeSat or FreeView (I forget which) stopped receiving all but the most basic terrestrial channels some years ago, so I watch most of the racing on my equally-ancient iphone XR.
So colour only cos it was free, makes sense.

When you croak they'll get Time Team in there to see what they dig out of the permafrost in your carpet...

I by no means agreed with everything my late father ever said, but some of his takes on things stand the test of time for me.

He regarded everyone on: TV, radio, and in comedy, the music industry etc as "Music Hall persons" - there to entertain those who had "proper jobs" on their down time.

He was puzzled by the entire concept of "celebrity" - "why would I put a performing monkey on a pedastal?" he asked.

Anyway, he reckoned believing their own publicity and becoming caricatures of themselves was the downfall of all of them - from John Lennon ("we're bigger than Jesus Christ") to people like John McCririck (massive caricature of himself in his later years) and it applies to people like Chapman today.

These people just aren't to be taken seriously.

That's pretty much how things are viewed in the current Orchid household. The present Mrs O is particularly vexed by the burgeoning plethora of 'celebrity' programmes. I have to don my cycling helmet and Kevlar jacket when such a programme inadvertently appears on the screen.

Chapman went out with a close friend of mine about 30 years ago. He was not particularly nice to her and I remember going out to dinner with them to the Italian in Newmarket (plus my ex). Chapman spent the entire evening ridiculing her, calling her fat, useless and a waste of oxygen. As she had serious confidence issues, we sat there aghast and it was all I could do to stop my ex decking him in the middle of the restaurant.

He was extremely bad news for the friend, and her family and I managed to "extract" her from the relationship after a while. It did a lot of long lasting damage though and although it's not a direct result, I am attending her funeral next week (she was 56 and died due to health complications due to a long standing alcohol problem).

Can I add nails to my baseball bat?
