Surprised there hasn't been a topic opened to celbrate the Hannon yard winning BOTH Goffs races today.

Of course the team tactics he used in the fillies race were reprehensible, but in Ireland it is traditional to be courteous to visitors.

Amazing achievement for an excellent and very much underrated trainer. What I like about him is that he seems to be able to do it with various types of horses. Send him a 5,000Y or a 50,000Y and the likelihood he'll place it to get maximum potential from it, and all of this whilst having Hughesy as stable jockey too!

Completely agree and so consistent for so long now. Because hes so straightforward and down to earth, people wont be hanging ridiculous "genius" tags on him but it must take some skill to runthat operation.

A great achievement for Hannon. I thought Gan Amhras might have won from a more favourable draw.

Lovely day at The Curragh and a big thanks to Goffs for the hospitality in the marquee for those of us lucky enough to have a little interest in a runner.
Our filly didn't run very well (she'd been 2nd to the runner up on debut) due to the ground which was a little loose on top.
Connections of the winner Minor Vamp were not bullish about her chances pre race because of the draw but she defied that and gave Rainbow Views' fans another form boost.

come on Gal

thats surely not the point...the races are their to be won..he targets them

if it's wrong to have such large prizes for 2yo then its the fact that they exist that is wrong..not the trainers that try to win them

The Hannon/Doyle combination successfully target the big two year old prizes. They also sell a lot of the winning ones after their two year old career. That's their niche, nothing wrong with that, they do it well. The Doyles have many other clients and have success with older horses for those owners too.

Why is Gal being shushed for pointing out that they rarely train on when coming from Hannons ?!

Yeah, I was just pointing it out as a limitation. Channon regularly gets a hard time for his not training on consistently. Hannon appears to be in the same boat.

It sounded like a sneer frankly. I dont see how its a limitation if its not something that is being targeted. The progressive profile of Paco Boy this year proves that he can deliver with older horses when the needs be

Why is it any less worthy for a trainer to concentrate on 2 year olds than it is for one to specialise in staying chasers say?

He is clearly very good at what he aims/targets to do...but it is a limited target.

Is Hannon as hard on his 2 year olds as Channon reportedly is?

One thing about Hannon which takes away from him slightly is his strike rate is not fantastic.

Kinda limits their chances of winning a classic if they're bottomed out before they're three. I think every trainer should aspire to win a classic, as every jumps trainer should aspire to win a Grade 1 at Cheltenham.Hannon could train horses to peak at three if he wished. It's purely an economic approach and it works, so good for them.

Hes not been out of the classics picture though has he? To be fair, how many such cheply bouight animals really compete in the classics? Sir Percy was one, but you are generally looking at top blood lines

Essentially Hannon targets the 2000 Guineas for his better horses, and you have to say he's done a pretty good job of it.

Have to disagree there, if you look back , smallish money horses have been doing the business, you named one, Cockney rebel, dutch art, vital equine are others just off the top of my head. The huge money Coolmore and Godolphin spend is to manipulate the market. Huge money doesn't have to be spent .Here's another hannon /Doyle purchase, Indian ink £25k.

Judging by the way it's going at Goffs at the mo, I'd imagine they'll be gving out one free with every Fruit scone purchased by the end of the week.

I suppose thinking back now, there has been a flurry of cheaper horses winning the classics... didnt think that one through!

good for sport though isnt it?

But given that hannon has made good use of many 3 year olds, then i think the idea that he regaulr fails to properly develop his two year olds is wide of mark. Channon maybe different

I'm too lazy to do the stats but my strong feeling is he's a very good trainer who concentrates on peaking horses early, for economic reasons.

Fozzy stack takes the same approach in Ireland (myboycharlie,Hammers boy,Ryehill dreamer) Rather than try and take on the big boys at three. He turns them into something desirable early on and than flips them and goes and buys early types again for syndication the following year (mostly at Doncaster) I'd say Fozzy and the Doyles are probably the best people to buy an early one for you.....although I'd give it a go too if asked ;)

That's the type of horse he buys though- precocious types that he can crack on with at 2.

Soul City should make a very nice 3yo IMO.
