Geoffrey or Jeff is the name for a bloke who wears a knitted tie or a social worker in a leather jacket with a ponytail - avoid at all costs

May I proffer a compromise? By all means call him Lenin, but that should be his surname, preferably hyphenated, such as Cholmondley-Lenin. His full name should be Rupert Peverill Geoffrey Wingate Cholmondley-Lenin, but, yok, yok, you (ironically, of course) simply call him Charlie. Howzat?

I've got a friend called Geoffrey & he's grand! He certainly doesn't wear knitted ties or leather jackets & he isn't a social worker either......he's one of the best horseman I've ever known & he runs a stud & breaking/pre-training yard. :P

DG, as I'm owned by a JR, I agree with everything in your post!! It is uncanny and has given us all in our house a good laugh.

I'm having a similar problem Kathy, a few months ago I bought a 2yo Appaloosa gelding, who is currently still out in his herd and still. Cant decide on what to call him, except NOT spot, spotty or anything similar, Sylvester is numbr one choice at the moment.

Any ideas?

Well, I have to admit, despite all you wonderful suggestions, that b/friend was won over by Barney in more ways than one! We had agreed on re"Steve" on the way to pick him up and Barney as 2nd choice, and then as soon as b/f clapped eyes on the said JR he just said to me "he doesn't look like a Steve"! Now some of you may think I manipulated my fella, but he had read all the suggestions on here and particularly liked "Hitler" but agree that they neighbours may have disapproved of my calling for Hitler out in the garden.

I took lots of photos of Barney today and I am hoping to be able to post a picture on here on Monday as I am still without Broadband and a proper computer at the moment.

Thanks again for all your help, and LE, if I can help, I will let you know my suggestions. My own racehorse is sharing a paddock currently with another racehorse called "Kevin" (wicked animal it is) and a yearling called, you've guessed it "Spotty"!!!

Thanks again everyone and I can't tell you how pleased I am that neither Stalin nor Lenin are currently asleep on my sofa!

PS Rhys Mogg has hissed and spat but I think Barney and Rhys will soon be friends.... from a distance!!

LE, whilst I think Sylvester is a nice name, I always worry what names like that will get shortened to which is why I try to think of names that are difficult to shorten if possible. I didn't realise quite how hard it was to name animals until I was looking for a name for my JR, who, incidently is currently fast asleep on my lap.... and I am at work! :D It's a good job the boss doesn't mind! B)

Love E: you could call your Appaloosa "Pimplenel" or "Ackney" if you don't want a direct reference to his spottiness.

No Barney it is I'm afraid everyone. He had his first trip to the vet's today and the 2 women in there couldn't stop complimenting me on him (they probably do that to all their new customers!) and telling me how cute he is. He is a real ladies man and lapped it all up and didn't mind at all whilst the lovely lady checked all his bits and gave him the once over. He is so well behaved. I am sure it won't last. I haven't quite got the hang of housetraining him yet, so any tips would be gratefully received. Everytime he has a drink or food I take him outside. Sometimes he does his business and sometimes he waits until he is back inside and then wees on the carpet. He won't wee on the newspaper, just wherever he is stood at the time. You men eh! He is only 16 weeks old, so I am not too worried about it yet. He travels in the car fine in a large cage so taking him to and from work isn't a problem. He will be microchipped soon and back for his 2nd lot of jabs in 2 weeks. People have told me horror stories about JR's but so far, I wouldn't swap mine for anything. We are now thinking of getting another dog to keep him company, but with Christmas looming we may hang fire for a little while to see how it all goes. By the way, Rhys Mogg came into the lounge to look at him last night whilst he was asleep on the boyfriends chest. She is not overly pleased at having to live upstairs at the moment, but until they can live together in harmony, she is quite happy to keep her distance. I thought having a puppy would be a complete nightmare, but so far, so good!

Got it one Krizon! He answers to his name now, sort of and we haven't stopped laughing at him since he arrived. He has such big feet, that he tries to run fast and then ends up doing cartwheels as the momentum of the run just carries him along too fast. He has been wearing a collar and leash when he goes out and doesn't mind it at all. Something is bound to go wrong.... soon....

PAWS FOR THOUGHT!!!

its just a matter of time before someone invents a poop catcher and puts a lot of people out of a job?

I was on POOLE beach in the summer and a dog (four legged) decided to do it!! and before it hit the ground a mature lady with DOG WARDEN on her t-shirt was there to scoop it up.................

Just hope your not eating while reading this?........... :o

Maybe POOLE was the apprenticeship!! now fully qualified..................

Poole hasnt got any elephants.... my dad carries a potato in his pocket to keep them away.......

Works for Tigers too -havent seen any of those round here lately either.. :P

Loads of my friends are owned by JR's Kathy - and they are all really good - one is a bit iffy temperament wise, but as long as tehy are sensible it wont be a problem. Good luck with yours!!

Thanks Trudi. He is absolutely gorgeous. He is nearly house trained at home, and just working on the same in the office. Everybody loves him! Rhys Mogg (the boss of the house) told him exactly what she thought of his this evening, and then ran off back upstairs whilst Barney was trying to work out whether he should chase her or not. It's a major step getting a puppy (especially a JR) but so far, I could not be happier with him - famous last words. We may even get him a friend in The New Year! :D
