Veiled woman to give C4's speech

The wearing of the niqab has been hotly debated
A veiled Muslim woman will deliver this year's alternative Christmas speech on Channel 4, the broadcaster has said.
Khadija, a Zimbabwean-born British citizen who has been wearing the full veil - or niqab - for 10 years, has been given the slot.

The message will reflect a year in which the wearing of religious clothing and symbols have "dominated the news agenda", said a Channel 4 spokesman.

A counterpoint to the Queen's Christmas speech first appeared on C4 in 1993.

The spokesman added that the specific contents of the message would be released closer to Christmas Day.

Covering up

Previous presenters have included Sharon Osbourne, Ali G, The Simpsons, the Rev Jesse Jackson and the late Quentin Crisp.

Khadija is a freelance lecturer in Islamic studies and the Koran.

The right to wear the niqab made the headlines earlier this year when the Leader of the House of Commons, Jack Straw, said that it hindered communication.

The niqab - Arabic for "full veil" - means covering up completely, including gloves and a face covering which leaves just a slit for the eyes.

Channel 4's spokesman also said that the controversy has "generated a debate about multiculturalism, secularism and integration - a debate in which British Muslims have played a key role and one that will shape the future of British society".

C4 are getting conservative. In years gone by they'd have done it with a woman wearing absolutely nothing.

I wonder how many millions of people celebrating Christmas are actually Christians, and how many just go through all the motions because it's expected of them by friends and family? Who will say 'no' to the office CHRISTMAS party because they've never been in a church, and have no intention of ever reading, let alone owning, a Bible?

It's the time of year for the most glorious hypocrisies and sentimental tosh, probably only rivalled by summer weddings where the bride and groom are entering a church for perhaps only the second time (given they were baptised) in their lives.

I can hardly get excited about yet another 'alternative' speech at Christmas, when most of the drivel on television is full of faked, assumed fascination with Christ and His message.

Bah, humbug!

No, but with seven veils at the start and none at the end.

I don't believe you have to be a Christian to join in the celebrations. If the local Muslims put on a big party to celebrate Eid I'd be right in there! Those women with their veils on are so sexy!!

BTW, is it true that in the Bagdhad strip clubs the men shout, "Come on, hen, show's yer face"?

That's just what they tell us. They must have several bottles of voddie strapped around their legs underneath those baggy troosers.

But all the lamb and rice fit to stuff a hippo... just read last night that some 175,000 goats, mostly from China, have arrived in Saudi in time for the post-Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca, or Makkah) celebrations. Poor things won't be celebrating for long!

That's not a nice thing to say about those lovely orientals.

No swearing, please. Just for the hake of it, sir.

Phillips - you little snitch! Teacher's pet! We'll get YOU in the playground!
