They are cheaper but the spec I am on about is not a cd player and the like but the mechanicals and suspension which can make a big difference when driven on our roads. They are right hand drive but like I said they are made for the Japanese.

I love peugeots, i've got a 306GTi and have never had a problem with her, and believe me that thing gets flogged (Lambourn to Newbury in 20 mins the other day - hoping theres no speed cameras got me!) I'd also recommend a Fiat Punto which i adored but got written off, through no fault of mine, fairly small and ideal for a new driver.

If I could afford it, my dream cars would be a new mini or MG ZR, you'd struggle to get a new one for under 8k but used you might get lucky

I am thinking of buying a coupé. I assume its a mid life crisis. What make would anybody recommend?
A Bentley Continental GT coupé

Oh, yesss.... yesss.... YESSSSSSSSS! :D

My grandmother drove a Lagonda, so I think motoring aspirations must be inherited. Sadly, the family dough wasn't. Brian, gorra pic of a Lagonda for moi? Please?

Phhhwoaaarrrrrrrrrr! :) Woof! Woof! Ding, dong! Now that's what I call sex on wheels! B) I thangggggyew!

Aside: Don't delude yourself, dearie, you're not going to get any of that, either. :(

(I suppose it's posing outside the west wing of Hartigan Hall? Yep, thought so.)

Sol, would endorse what Jon says about the mazda 323. I've had mine for 6 years now, and it's about as reliable as they come. Never had any problems, and a decent size and pace from the 1.5 engine.

I have to say I'm deeply impressed with all you're motoring knowledge . The Bentley would be suitable but oh bugger the insurance group is murder :P
I sort of have it narrowed down ,
Ford focus diesel , because it's got a good resale value , economical , safe , aesthetically pleasing :D
Nissan xtrail 4x4 . Voted best in group by what car . Good for pulling a horsebox but resale value drops 2.5k/yr
mini cooper , not looking to pull babes Terry  , great car , good resale but still dear for what you get for your money

I have about 10k -15k to spend but I don't want to buy a new car if it doesn't have a good residual value . As a first time driver the insurance group is important too . Doesn't matter how many years you have a bike license apparently . Car's are a separate category so you're treated as a first time driver .

My wife had a Mazda 323 which she bought in 1992 - she gave it to her sister 3 years ago - has never had a problem that wasn't driver inflicted. Never needed more than a rare service and still running perfectly 13 years later.

I have a Hyundai Sante Fe. 4 years old and no problems so far. It wouldn't beat a bus from a standing start over 100m (I have the 2l version - would get the 2.4l next time) but is very comfortable and spacious for a car of its price.

Solerina, the Cooper is quite expensive for a small car but as you say you don't lose much value.

We've also have a Focus TDI Ghia, which is crap! Its just over two years old and is due to be replaced :D Been in for leaking in at the passenger side footwell, has had two fuel injector pumps fitted, give up counting how many times its been in to get the CD player sorted, just excepted the thing doesn't like playing my type of music :o Tracy (wor lass), is the main driver as I prefer something capable of carrying a pallet! But come October-ish I'm starting to fancy a duel fuelled Volvo ;)

WELL ITS BEEN KNOWN FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE A ROLLER THAT GOES WRONG TOO!!!

I am only speaking as I actually find and my FOCUS TCDI GHIA is supreme!!! so its that old adage you get good and bad regardless of what choice you make...................

P.S. had one minor problem when it was under 1 year old ...drivers armrest failed to function, stuck in upright position this was repaired under guarantee.......

Ford Focuses are nice cars, Sols, but I feel that they are overpriced. For less money you can get so much more with a different make. You'd really have to go a long way to beat a Volkswagen in my view, but again, they can be expensive to buy - they are very reliable & will last though. Golfs are my preference but Polos are nice to drive too. Peugeots are great little cars but again can be pricey compared to say, Citroens although the 206 is a lovely drive and a great looking car. I wouldn't give a Ford Ka the time of day, they are horrible & bloody small inside. I was very impressed with the Fiat Punto when I had one for a week last year, they are very nice to drive, shift a bit & are value for money. I had a Citroen Saxo VTR when I was in the UK and it was fantastic, I loved it to bits. It's got a 1.6 engine so really shifts for a small car & it handles absolutely beautifully, especially around bendy country lanes at speed! :shy:  It's a shame they don't make them anymore as they are grand little cars & bigger inside than they appear to be. They are also good value for money when compared to the Peugeot 106 as they are basically the same car - they are built around the same chassis which is why they are so good to handle. I would thoroughly recommend one, & when I return to the UK I will have either a Saxo VTS, a Fiat Punto Sporting, a Peugeot 206 or a Golf GTi on my shopping list. (I am very jealous of my brother's lovely Audi A3 also, but sadly I cannot afford one.....)
