Neigh, one of our distant cousins from forumland disappeared three or four weeks ago. Anyone know why?

I know more and more people are relying on the likes of Twitter these days, and I guess it's a warning for all of us who enjoy Talking Horses and other forums out there to stay active. Personally I've never really got the same thing from Twitter and don't fully get why some people move in that direction for horse racing chat.

Hi Maruco

I see the location on your profile is Sydney and Australia may hold the key as Paul Beck moved out there a while back and may possibly know. I have been in touch with various people on various forums who also posted on Neigh including Roddy and Grassy on here and no one has any idea.

A guy called Phil Sinfield dealt with the new registrations and a guy on FF sent him an email but as far as I know did not receive any reply.

Some of the tipping competitions such as The League Of Neightions were a bit different and that was one of the reasons I went on there as I don't bet for real and it at least gave you an interest when watching the races.

Very astute Roger. It is indeed me. :)

I've also tried to contact Phil, but to no avail. It's always been a bit of a spiritual home for me being the first poster under its initial guise of the Steeplechase Studio set up by Roy Waterhouse in 2000. And in fact I set up and ran the original comp and its still in its original format. Work prevented me from maintaining and scoring it in a timely manner so Phil took over when he took the forum on from Roy, and others have since done the scoring.

As you say it was always a bit of fun to get into a card without having to have any financial commitment and the comp was exactly that, just a bit of fun and interest each weekend. Maybe we can resurrect it with the larger Talkinghorses audience?

A real shame if Neigh is gone though as it had its own distinct feel, and there have always been some really good posters, fortunately some of whom are also here alongside yourself, Roddy and Nick.

I know Maurice!

I seem to remember the two of us sharing a bet on Lingo, one of JP's in the Greatwood Hurdle 8 or 9 years ago, and watching the race together although that connection was through here not Neigh.

Actually I think that ended up being Lingo's last race after suffering a suspensory or something similar. And if memory serves me correct he broke down on the gallops and had to be pts when they were trying to get him back for the Champion Hurdle.

I started my forum life on Neigh. Some good characters on there. But it seemed there was more discussion on Talking Horses so I moved across and Neigh was going very quiet.

Tell us more!

The very popular Cheltenham Ante Post Competition on here is also an indirect legacy from Neigh, I think.

There was a weekly competition which ran for the duration of either the NH season or The Flat season. During the week Phil nominated a Saturday meeting and members had to make a selection in each race nominating one of them the nap, rather like the Royal Ascot competition I will be running. Whereas mine is a point scoring competition, Neighs was based on a settling method and there were monthly winners as well as a winner for the main competition.

The other one, the League of Nations Comp was mainly built around the three big NH Festivals in the Spring and consisted of teams from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales competing and with a nominated captain trying to score extra £ for his team as well. Led to plenty of banter between the teams.

We will see how the RA competition goes and if members find it fun we could create a similar League of Nations competition for say Glorious Goodwood or Galway or I would be happy to run competitions as per the RA format for those meetings.

Sounds a good idea to get the comps back wherever they are . Was always a bit of fun on Neigh and the National teams thing was brilliant. Only time I have ever been captain of Wales at anything. Be good to get Wenger on here to and several others who really know their NH racing

A Cup of Nations would be good craic.

I always like Galway and Goodwood week, as it gives the flat fans a chance to make their mark.

As captain of the Irish team, I will find it difficult to leave some lads out. We have much strength in depth.

Didn't we have a similar international competition in years gone by? Terry was England captain once I seem to recall..

On the same subject, does Atacanta still exist?
I imagine that it does, but I've not seen it for years, nor does it show up on a Google search.

Too pished.

Good thread.

DO in 'I am Minnehoma' shocker.

Hope Phil just got bored and not butt-gored.

I will re-read tomorrow and have a crack at another reply (if I remember)

I ended up forgetting all about Neigh as it seemed to go into hibernation during the flat season. [Ironic that, isn't it; using 'hibernation' for a summer phenomenon.]

Much as I prefer the jumps, it's definitely easier to make money on the flat, even without Slim Chance.

I managed to dig out an old phone number for Phil who ran Neigh and he has confirmed its permanent demise. Apparently he was doing an upgrade on the software and lost all of the data. He hasn't been personally engaged for some time and decided it was all too hard which is a damn shame, but hopefully Talking Horses will benefit by a few lost souls joining us.

On the competition conversation. The rules were simple. It is the main Saturday card, 1 pt win selection for all races with an additional 1pt nap, and is run as a level stakes profit league table each month.

Let me know if your interested and if there are 10 or more of us and a couple of vounteers for scoring I'll set it up from the beginning of July.

Cheers

Try and get it done before my Summer harvest in the plate at Market Rasen in July old boy

I'm planning a trip back home to coincide with your follow up autumn harvest at the same racecourse Roddy!

I'll start a thread next week on its own to see who's interested in the comp.
