What's a rated race ?

You also get rated conditions races for horses rated under a certain handicap rating and novice chases for horses that had a certain (low) hurdles rating to keep the larger stables from farming them and affecting the future rating of those that finish behind.
Ruby is all against these races though, or was as a jockey !
 
These are the detailed conditions for today's 2.45 at Downpatrick. Horses rated 120 or less compete on level terms while horses rated between 121 and 130 can also take part but must carry an extra lb for each lb above the rating of 120. Other rated races have similar but not necessarily identical conditions.

The Randox Rated Hurdle of €16,000

Winner will receive €9,600 (Penalty Value: €9,440)
Second will receive €3,200
Third will receive €1,600
Fourth will receive €800
Fifth will receive €480
Sixth will receive €320

A hurdle for five years old and upwards which at entry are rated 120 or less (also open to horses which at entry are rated 121-130)
About 2 miles 2 furlongs 165 yards
€128 to enter, €32 extra if declared to run
Weights: ....11st 4lbs

Penalties -
Performances before 16th March - for every 1lb above the rating of 120 ... 1lb extra
On or after 16th March - for each hurdle race won ... 5lb extra
Horses that have not run three times over hurdles and/or do not have a published handicap hurdle rating may enter and run at the discretion of the handicapper provided their performances are rated 130 or less
 
If you condsider that race at Downpatrick, (moderate race, very minor track) with nearest equivalent at Chepstow (much stronger venue) , same afternoon, on prizemoney, you can see problem in keeping good horses in Britain.
