Desert Orchid?

Dessie was a smashing horse and one I really rated but, as I implied earlier, I tend not to get too attached to horses.

I was in my mid-late teens when Titus Oates was in his pomp and he was one of the ones that got me into the sport. He put up some fantastic weight-carrying performances. I have this memory of him tanking along in front, head low as though grazing as he went, and then picking up when the race started hotting up and just keeping on relentlessly.

Nijinsky, now that I think about it, was another that entranced me as that was round about the same time as Titus would have been starting to make his name as a chaser and, being a Triple Crown winner waiting to happen from the day he won the Guineas he was great for the game.

Then there was the Brigadier, which I was sure would beat Mill Reef and My Swallow in their Guineas. I was a Brigadier boy from then on.

I reckon once I started studying form seriously (I must have been about 18) I stopped getting sentimental about horses although who couldn't get sentimental about Red Rum??

Flat race The Derby.
My father could name every winner from 1780 and their pedigree .

NH Race. King George VI Chase took over from Santa Claus in the mid 1970s and is the most anticipated race for me since though the Champion chase is most likely my favourite race.

TOP TEN HORSES
Grundy

Tied Cottage
Buck House

Titus Oates ran in every top chase through the winter, handicap or conditions 2m4f to 3m5f and won more often than not.
He was before my time but featured in every Stud and Stable magazine that I had not torn as a nipper so I have a strong attachment to him also though I never remember him racing.

National.

Was always a big occasion in our house because of my grandad. Still is a bog occasion, but actually becoming a racing fan I’ve found love for other races. That, or the fact the national is just another normal handicap for me now. Think we’ll see several multiple winners now in the years to come.

Supreme probably now for me, marks the start of my fav week of the year.

Ten Horses

Hedgehunter
Blue Charm (finished second in the 99 national, I cried when it got beat)
Earth Summit
Sunny Bay
Kalashnikov
Faugheen
Vieux Lion Rouge
Vautour
Kauto Star
Sprinter Sacre

The National was the first race I remember following (it was a big occasion in our family with everyone putting wee bets on) but now I think the Champion Hurdle or Queen Mum are my favourites

Ever since I was a child the Cheltenham Gold Cup has been the race to capture my imagination. The first one I rember watching was The Dikler pipping Pendil in 1973.

The Irish Grand National, the Savills Chase (Leopardstown Christmas), and the Irish Gold Cup would be other favourites.
