It's Haig, still in its original box (red with black lettering).

I've also got a half-bottle of White & Mackay, about the same age, also unopened.

Edit - The Haig is a one-litre bottle. I'm sure Mrs O bought it duty-free for her father when she was on a school trip but she must have got somebody to buy it for her as she'd be quite young at the time. Thinking about it again, it's probably more likely to be around 1970-1972.

Mrs O confirms it was bought in 1975 shortly after she turned 18 and was on a school trip to France at the end of sixth year. (I thought she'd bought it on a second-year trip.)

It's a blend from a duty free shop manufactured by a mass producer with unverifiable conditions of storage. Probably not worth much more than current shelf retail price I'd have thought.

If you'd got a reserve malt from a famous name, you might have something with a bit of value
 
Yes, I was aware whisky doesn't improve in the bottle so I wasn't holding any hopes in that respect. I just wondered if there people out there who collect it just as a kind of hobby and don't mind shelling out a bit for a rare-ish item. How many 43-year-old unopened and in the original box bottles are out there.

Simmo's auction link guy is looking into it.

If he comes back and says it's not worth any more than a normal proprietary whisky I'll just work my way through it over the next few weeks. I was going to open it the other night and thought maybe I should check it out first.
 
Brother having a look but said don't open it yet!!! He said older whiskies are getting rarer and unlike wine don't change in bottle so hang fire and we'll get back to you.

It was her mother who kept it hidden. It resurfaced when we were clearing out her bit of the house prior to putting the old hacienda on the market. Apart from that, I've only taken to drinking whisky in the last couple of years.

Cheers, jinnyj. Simmo's auction guy got back to me and said it might fetch £30-£50 at auction so I'm as well drinking it myself (his advice). But I haven't opened it yet...
 
My brother initially thought more like £100. And as he said older whiskies getting rarer so value could go up. I'll get back to you as soon as he does but I think he's doing a wine tasting in London this week.
