I have been asked to create a poll on the Cheltenham Gold Cup but the problem with creating a poll on this board is that we are limited to ten choices so I have created an online poll via the following link using the top thirty horses currently in the market on Oddschecker. You can leave comments on there if you wish although you could of course leave them underneath on this thread if you prefer.

One vote per person

Cue Card is a horse that is hard to dislike. A few of us on here noted in a previous thread that last years GC looked a real battle and any of the top 4 might never be the same again.

Euros tip FL would be of interest at the prices, if he were to run.

Much that I like Cue Card I can't see him staying. Betfair chase is no guide as they did not cover anywhere near 3 miles 1 furlong, I would suspect more like 2 miles 7.

I've increased the poll choices on here to maximum 40.

All the polls will do is draw posts away from the main Race threads, and lead to the same race being debated in two different places.

They are pretty pointless endeavours largely; if you have an opinion, voice it on the main race thread for that event.

Fair enough, won't bother again.

There are people voting in the polls who don't like contributing to a thread.

Isn't this a discussion forum though? I, and I imagine the same is true for others, have little interest in seeing a poll - who cares? I do enjoy reading arguments for and against a particular horse's chances in a given race though. Does anyone really enjoy someone saying they are backing x horse by just posting his name? I don't. I like reading some reasoning and analysis behind it. Same principle applies here.

To echo GH, no offence intended by stating the above, but would surely be good to keep a discussion forum as just that.

Some people like to read poll results. And to see how they might evolve over time. Maybe DG thinks that there is so much hot air and ink on this forum, it is difficult to see which way the wind is blowing. Maybe.

I don't like polls either, for the record.

Well I think it's important to try and keep a forum fresh and not just be a platform for discussion although that is obviously it's prime function. It has to be said these discussions sometimes just go round in circles and BTB is right when he suggests sometimes it's difficult to see the general picture. As a non bettor I try and make my contribution by running various competitions, contributing different types of threads for example "This Day In Racing History" and others from various sources that I think might be of interest to other members, photography from time to time and just lately I have set up two polls, one of which currently has 56 votes so obviously there is a degree of interest in polls on here.It doesn't mean I am planning to flood the board with polls left, right and centre, this one and the CH one were the only ones I planned to do albeit repeating them nearer the time to see if the general consensus of who would win had shifted.Maybe I should have emphasised it is a poll only and to keep comments to the other thread, I can see Grassy's view that it stops the flow of the discussion by having comments on two different threads.

Just as I live with the betting threads and don't read them if I'm not interested I think those who want discussion have more than their share of threads in which to keep themselves involved and should accept there are those of us who like to be involved in other ways and they don't have to take part or read them if discussion is their main interest.

Polls are for tabloid readers.

I’m not a fan of polls either... “50 million Nazis can’t be wrong”... 99.0827% of the electorate approved Hitler’s annexation of Austria and most of you lot think Cue Card will win the Gold Cup... madness.:ninja:

That's the value of polls right there. With a conduit like Mr Miller they can get you from the Gold Cup to the Anchsluss in one easy sentence.

Long live polls. (That's polls, not Poles Steve).

Philip Fenton says that Last Instalment, unbeaten in four over fences, will make comeback from tendon injury in Kinloch Brae January 16.

Given his last performance and the likelihood that the idiosyncratic nature of Cheltenham is likely to suit, Rubi Ball looks a reasonable e/w bet, particularly if you knew he'd turn up. Anyone know whether Mullins intends to run him?
