Who's Clean And Who's Dirty Then?

Curiousity has got the better of me from the driving thread. People have rightly pointed to the revenue implications, and I wouldn't dispute that. I think there's another sinister by product too, which is all part of the civilian surviellance agenda that western governments are embarking on whether it be through ID cards, Mobile phones emmissions, smart cards etc

But leaving that aside, I recently hired out a box Luton van, and the hire company basically conceeded they used to penalise holders of dirty licences through their terms and conditions, but can't do any longer as over half the hirers had points. Since Blair strated his love affair with speed cameras, how many of us have been done?

I'm prepared to own up to 6 points at the moment, 3 of which come off in the next 6 months.

I should say both occasions annoyed the hell out of me, as these were non 30 mph roads in truth, and had clearly been put there to raise money. They weren't really residential roads either, although a few houses existed that were well set back. I wasn't even in a hurry, and was half lost, and driving quite slowly for the conditions thus (36 mph both occasions). Having said that, I'd have to be the first conceed that I'd got away with it a few times, when I have pushed the envelope, so there's a bit of what goes round comes round etc

I'm clean :D I've been driving for just over four years now, incident free bar a scrape with a wall in the carpark at work.

Mr GG has been driving for 13 years and his only blemish was 3 points and £60 for jumping a red light.

I'm clean. I don't drive full stop and do the governmentally encouraged thing of taking public transport. Have had very few problems with it with the exception of the odd train delay.

Nearly 12 years with a licence and it's clean - received 3 points for speeding seven years ago that have since lapsed.

I have been driving for over 25 years (I got my licence when I was 8 years old B) ) and currently have the only 3 points on my licence I have ever had for a slight speeding offence by a suspect mobile speed camera.

I personally love driving and have driven literally thousands and thousands of miles, partly through my first job and partly through horseracing. I have never (yet) had an accident.

Driving solidly since 1992, restrictively for 20 years before that, nil points! Guilty as hell of speeding on m'ways when the lanes are very clear (and always ensuring an escape lane's available, no matter how slow we're going). Will never, ever go over 30 or 'speed as posted' around residential or other built-up areas. What disgusts me is how many vehicles with 'Baby on Board' stickers will - presumably, possibly killing someone else's kid's a risk they're prepared to take.

Clean - had my licence nearly 4 years. I was once driving 110 on the A1 when a police car pulled up alongside me, the driver looked over and shook his head, no idea how i got away with it, might be cos it was 5am and there was no-one else on the road, plus he might have been impressed at 110 from a 1.3 litre fiesta!!!!

I rigidly keep to city speed limits but motorways I treat as advisable and usually cruise about 80

For Gods sake there must be someone out there who's got more than 6 points, I refuse to believe I'm TH's top scorer

If there are higher scorers they may be too embarrassed to admit it publicly, Warbler. :D

I got three points for speeding on the A1(M) in 2006 going to, of all places, bloody Southwell. (At least it was a jumps meeting.) That's all I have - my previous speeding offence was rushing home to watch a game on television in Italia '90.

I have got away with a lot though.

This ain't looking good for me is it

In fairness I don't regard any of mine as being the result of dangerous or reckless driving. As mentioned elsewhere I was done in the late 80's some where between Cannock and Walsall I seem to recall, which led to some inspired excuses, none of which cut any ice with the bill

Like Brian though, I'd got a way with plenty, where I would have deserved booking and a short ban if the truth were told, so that the three occasions I was done were such gentle affairs bordering on the pedantic carries a sort of justice.

Actually a quick tot up of declared motorists reads

4 dirty
1 clean but spent
6 clean

So the idea that half the motorists in the country have endorsements, as suggested by the hire firm is born out to some extent I suppose

My licence is now clean but:

Oct 4 2002 - 3 points for doing 38 on a 30 mph dual carriageway - still annoyed
Oct 6 2002 - 3 points for 36 in a 30 mph - hmmm

Oct 12th, 2006 received first penalty notice
Oct 19th, 2006 received second penalty notice.

Have taken every opportunity since to tell local Police Constabulary how wrong they have got their priorities, especially when they took 48 hrs to investigate a break-in to my house.
Must admit they do appear to have had a rethink and seem to have kept speed cameras to places where they should.

One interesting piece of news from a few years ago:
Locals were making complaints about speeding cars on a very wide road near the promenade. So, mobile cameras were set up. Unfortunately, the cars from out of the area were being 'flashed' by motorists so the only motorists pulled for speeding were the ...... local residents - they were not happy!

Goes to prove that the only motorists without speeding points are the lucky ones as told to me by a police officer, at least he was showing sympathy for public opinion.

Another little gem:
I was travelling along a motorway with pools of fog forming in the depressions and had tuned into a local radio station who were reporting a red Rover 416SLi (mine) travelling too fast. It had been rung in by a responsible motorist I had just overtaken who thought it necessary to warn listeners of worsening weather - I wonder in which hand he was hiding his mobile phone - but thats another grievence.

Safe motoring everyone.

Suny...... Am I right in thinking that Spain has incremental speed fines ? Are these in lieu of points on a license ?

For the record I have a totally clean license and am not big on speeding, though I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm a great driver.

So, having a clean licence means that you haven't been caught, yet!! ;)

Montyracing has introduced the mobile phone into this discussion..........is anyone on here prepared to admit that they use a mobile phone (not a hands-free set) whilst driving?

I rarely drive these days. When I did drive more regularly I found driving with a mobile difficult & distracting even with a handsfree kit - though this was a few years ago when a handsfree kit consisted of a wire connected to an earpiece that fell out if you turned your head.
