Good to see the US put some good old political pressure on private companies, eh?

Funny how censorship in China etc is abhorrent but when it involves the US it is in the 'national interest'.

Palin has called for Assange to be "hunted down", Huckabee says that anything less than execution would be too kind a penalty for whoever is responsible for the leaks, an adviser to the Canadian Prime Minister says he "would not be unhappy if Assange disappeared".

These are the people who risk having blood on their hands, not the leakers.

this is a theatre

US providing this funny man the information and acting like it was a filtration.

I would like wikileaks people would have the bollocks to do the same with a chinesse, arab or russian info.

Funniest thing of all is Assange is more or less a front man for Wikileaks at this stage, nothing more.

This crusade to get him will have little effect on Wikileaks.

Bloody hell Hamm. you do sound like you swallow the guardian at times :)

World of difference. The US is miles more open than the UK or France say let alone china. Thats a given. Availability of information is far more of a right there than near enough anywhere else in the world

Whilst the patronising comments about security and the public by william Hague on the news yesterday were not attractive, it is a fact that these emails were sent in confidence. They are more gosspiy than anything else and largely confirm what was suspected, but in any organisation confidentiality within certain communications is a given, otherwise its simply restricts the ability to communicate

Good point sunybay. Now that would be interesting....

if anything the leaks have confirmed the US's intentions are not extreme in any way or even as cynical as the left would love to wish. Thats from what ive seen anyway

The leaks I've read about do tell us a few interesting things about Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Any time I've tried, I can't get onto the site. It's like there's something someone doesn't want me to know.

Grey

The biggest leak on Saudi was about iran and the nuclear development, but it wasnt really a suprise was it?

Its long been hinted that most of the arab world is of the same mind. they see Iran as a potential loose cannon

No, you don't - Clive is a secret Guardian horder, but slightly afraid of being construed as a leftie, hence all his comments in the chit chat section.

Not in this case - haven't had time to read the guardian on this - have read most accounts second hand or listening to the world tonight on radio 4 (must be the best programme on either tv or radio).:p

This is complete rubbish

If a "leak" of of confidential conversation came to light which triggered an aggressive response from a child like hyper senstive regime such as Zimbabwe or iran (let alone China) ten the blood would clearly be on the leakers hands

lots of things in any walk of life will be said behind closed doors which if made public would cause no end of trouble. Thats a simple fact. These cables and emails were confidential opinions and should have remained so

Anyone here who disagrees should feel equally comfortable about a confidential conversation between themselves and their boss being splattered across their company website

The leaks have triggered a childlike aggressive response from the people I have mentioned.

Yes but they are not in a position to wage war or bang up dissidents. Yet anyway...and hopefully never

What if one of these leaks named an undsiclosed leader of a dissident group in iran or China?

Are you being serious? Have you forgotten the wars started by the Republicans and the detention centres at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and elsewhere?

What if one of these leaks named an undsiclosed leader of a dissident group in iran or China?

That would indeed be a worry.

I am talking about the names you gave and also refering to domestic dissidents who are likely to "disappear".

The war in afganistan would have been kicked off by either party. No administration could have stood still and allowed AQ to build a client state given the events of 9/11.

Do you think it's right the government lean on companies such as Mastercard and Visa and tell them who they should and shouldn't trade with?

I would agree to

Should a goverment simply stand aside if Mastercard were trading with AQ or an arms manufacturer was delivering to Sudan or iran say

they wont always get it right but businesses will be tempted to trade anywhere without consideration to security or human rights
