Bonfire, the Dante winner, and second favourite for the Derby, is out of a mare called Night Frolic. Those of you who were members of Talking Horses back in the Jurassic days may remember that a couple of us who were regulars on Talking Horses were two of a small group of owners of Night Frolic.

We had her only for her racing career. We had the opportunity to lease one of two 2-y-o fillies from the Duke of Roxburghe to race at two and three. They were with John Hills to be broken. John and his assistant trainer both chose the one we later named Night Frolic without knowing which the other had chosen.

They rejected the other filly because she walked strangely and ran even more so, crossing her front legs from side to side as she galloped. She went back to race under the Duke's ownership.

Night Frolic had two races at two without success. She had nine races at three, winning one - on heavy ground at 14/1. We weren't on as she hated the ground (said JH).

The one that was rejected, by the way ran five times as a 2-y-o, winning all five. As a 4-y-o she had had seven races, all Group 1. She won four - the 1,000 Guineas, the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Coronation Stakes sand the Sun Chariot Stakes. She was also beaten half a length by Soviet Song in Leopardstown's Matron Stakes.

Her name was Attraction.

Its better to have loved and lost than not have loved at all. Like a fisherman talking of the ones that got away you have a story for life. "There are tides in the affairs of man which taken at the flood lead to fortune..etc" or in the words of Dempsey or Makepiece "Lifes a bitch; and then you die".

:) Yes John Hills had the choice. Mark Johnston found that quite funny I think.

What's to say MJ wouldn't have made the same choice though?

Who knows? But Mark has a pretty good track record of choosing/buying well at the right price and knowing when a physical abnormality won't stop a horse from running.

Attraction was rated in the low 120s, Night Frolic mid 60s.

The Wandering Stars had the double whammy of a bad racehorse and a great mare and owning her for the former but not the latter. As Brutto says will the pain ever recede? :(

Has Attraction thrown any foals? If Night Frolic can throw the Derby 2nd fav...

Yes to Galileo, Montjeu, Cape Cross, Pivotal.

The Montjeu filly Devastation beat her stablemate Izzi Top for John Gosden/Duke of Roxburghe at two. And finished fifth to the same horse at Newbury last year as a 3yo.

The Cape Cross filly won her maiden at two for Mark Johnston/Roxburghe when odds-on never raced again.
