Wind operations

A few trainers have copped on to the feed thing and are using Simple System feeds or ERS/Releve pellets.

SS sounds like he may be flipping his pallet under extreme pressure or inded swallowing is tongue, that and bleeding are what stop them dead.

Nicholls uses Red Mills Horse Care Cubes specifically for ulcers. However ulcers are hugely complex. They can reoccur easily and also appear in the hind gut which are harder to treat I gather. It isn't just a case of a quick course of Gastroguard and its fixed. Some horses need their entire diet and regime changed to limit stress and maximise a more "normal" diet i.e. ad lib forage/turn-out etc. That isn't going to be easy for the life of a large yard.

Edgt - your pal is spot on - horses aren't designed to eat their current diets or be confined for 22 hours a day, many of them starved of forage (hay/grass etc) - Most yards I worked in fed 2 slices of hay a day and heaven forbid if you wanted to give your horse more! I adopted the US approach in which they permanently have filled haynets with English hay and alfalfa (a good buffer for acid build-up which causes ulcers). Horses are what are known as "trickle-feeders" and not designed to have empty stomachs for much of the day. However your theory about the feed man, they also used to feed copious amounts of bran mash twice a week after work days, and bran has been found to have a negative effect on the calcium/phosphorus ratio which could indicate why so many young racehorse suffer fractures.

I'd be amazed if they haven't looked at SS for a palate problem.

I'd be surprised if they haven't checked him out yet - once one starts they all cop on! And the Lambourn vets are pretty good.

I just felt he didn't look as good as he has done in the past. When he was at the peak of his powers, he looked every inch the equine filmstar. Incredible gloss to his skin - that was missing this year. For me for a horse to be 100% at this time of year, it has to have a coat you can see your face in and dappling across its neck and down its quarters. The pointer I ride out looks superb at the moment, dancing around, sqealing & bucking on really good terms with himself - sadly hes bred for 7f and is the slowest horse out. He does try though and has been 3rd, 2nd & 4th this year. If we can find a 4m4f point to point, we may get a win out of him this season!

What's he called jinny? Reminds me of one I used to ride out, we got a few wins out of him eventually. Romany Move he was called, Del in the yard. Slow as anything and small too but a lovely old stick. He won maiden, restricted and intermediate in the end.

Talab - bred by Sheikh Hamdan I believe. He's enormous! Won a very very poor race in Ireland. I told the boss (and the bloodstock agent who bought him) he was a very expensive buy for what he had done when he arrived in the yard and I wasn't wrong. The good thing is he is a great ride and huge character and I love going in to ride him every day.
