A friend has asked me for help with a Word problem but I have no idea what is causing it. He is typing a letter and every time he goes down to the next line it is starting it with a capital letter, as if he were writing poetry.

Does anyone know how to solve this, please.

Send for Betsmate!!!

It sounds like he's set some default up, which I'm sure is a problem e've all encountered before most commonly to do with numbering when the computer thinks it knows what you want to type and anticipates it for you

He doesn't want to stop capitalising the first letter of sentences! He wants to stop Word capitalising the start of a word in the middle of a sentence when he drops down a line.

Brian, I hope this "friend" of yours buys you a nice bottle of something this Christmas as a thank you for all the help you have been able to offer him via this forum. :)

It is the same thing I believe....

You can't have one or the other, you have both or neither if you know what I mean.

I've just realised that you were hinting that the guy who has asked for help is an imaginary friend and that it is I who has the problem, somehow not wanting to admit it. What a strange thing to do! After krizon I have probably sought more technical help for myself on here than any other member. The fact is that there are other racing people who like me are good at accessing odds comparison and betting sites but who are totally useless at the ins and outs of hardware and software. Unsurprisingly I know of few of them and have mentioned that I have had a lot of help from the forum. So where do you think they come when they have a difficulty, as this guy, a private handicapper known to a few on here, has with his Word?

"After" krizon? :brows: I think not, Monsieur! Why, this forum is fair littered with your queries on how-to this or how-to that. I've recently inquired about an all singin', all-dancin' printer, and had some jolly useful replies, but I think you probably lead in the number of IT queries, as you do in postings in general. Not that I'm competing, mind.

Is your friend using the return key when he drops down a line, Brian? (As opposed to the text wrapping automatically to another line). If so, Word will assume he is starting a new paragraph and will then automatically insert a capital - which I think is what Aligupter is driving at ..

I haven't got access to Word at home so I haven't been able to check this but if he clicks the format tab there may be something under an option called change case.

Word assumes that if you use the return key you are starting a new paragraph.

The start of a new paragraph also means the start of a new sentence (as far as Word is concerned, you do not have to use a full stop).

Word (if it is set up to do so) inserts a capital letter at the beginning of a new sentence.

Therefore, Word inserts a capital letter if you use the return key.

I never used to use predicitive texting but my new phone does make it easy so I use it all the time now.

Unfortunately for us mature people it needs to be adopted :o but its like that old adage "no one likes change" and it takes a bit of adaptation by the individual........ :o

Just like IMPERIAL to METRIC that we had to endure.........

No it doesn't - there is nothiong whatsoever wrong with normal texting. If you text quite a lot with the names of horses' in your messages then predictive text is a pain in the neck (and various other parts of the anatomy).

I have it turned off on my 'phone - I've got a little Nokia that opens out into a miniature QWERTY keyboard, which is really helpful (no RSI in your texting thumb  )
