Derby and Arc winner Workforce retired to stud

WORKFORCE, last year's Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner, has been retired to stud as reported in Monday's Racing Post.
The four-year-old will join former stablemate Harbinger in Japan next year where he will stand at Teruya Yoshida's Shadai Farm after a deal was completed by owner Khalid Abdullah.
Workforce, who was bred by Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms, is a son of King's Best, who also sired last year's Japan Derby winner Eishen Flash.
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to the owner, said: "He was an exceptional three-year-old and was one of only six horses to have completed the Derby and Arc double since the war.
"He has a wonderful temperament and winning the Derby in record time was an extraordinary achievement."
During an outstanding three-year-old campaign, Workforce was trained by Sir Michael Stoute to win the Derby by seven lengths in record time and then the Arc, in which he beat the Japanese challenger Nakayama Festa by a head under an inspired ride from Ryan Moore.
He was unable to match his two Group 1 wins in 2011 however and after making a winning return in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in May, he was runner-up in both the Coral-Eclipse Stakes and King George VI AndQueen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
His last start was in the Arc when he was a well-beaten 12th behind Danedream.
Workforce won four of his nine starts and more than £3.2m in prize-money.

I'd imagine they got an offer they couldn't refuse.
Even Khalid Abdullah is prepared to sell at the right price and the Japanese are prepared to pay. Harbinger is already at Teruya Yoshida's Shadai Farm.
Workforce has subsequently been syndicated and Shadai now own 50%. The other shares were reportedly sold out within hours of his syndication.

They also sold Derby winner Commander In Chief to Japan at the end if his racing career.
