Hurry up and move!!
Ok, so following on from all your "best horses never to have won" threads, I'm intrigued as to who you lot think the WORST horses that have won at the festival are....

Can/worms/opened... ;)

I suppose it depends on how you define worst?

In terms of ratings, the recent introduction of the Fred Winter would herald a new low while the hunters are generally a load of old cack.

Poorest winners of the big races?

Norton's Coin, Cool Ground and Flakey Dove would have to be right down there and there have been some duff winners of the RSA.

Champion Hurdle - Sublimity
Queen Mother - Voy Por Ustedes
Stayers - Shuil Ar Aghaidh
Gold Cup - Norton's Coin

And of course, the worst horse to have won three Gold Cups would be Best Mate...

He'd have done well to have won one of the renewals since he packed it in...

I've just remembered another duffer, even though it was one leg of a winning 3X for me that day: Davy Lad!

I had him along with Meladon (Triumph) and can't remember the other one but my 3x25p doubles and 25p treble paid well over £100. Big money for poor student.

I just picked out three on the day that i thought would act in bottomless ground (as it often was back then).

VPU and Newmill were dreadful winners of the Champion Chase.

Sublimity, Katchit, Punjabi and Hors La Loi III were all dreadful winners of the Champion Hurdle.

Katchit beat a 163 rated horse by a length

Hurricane fly beat a 162 rated horse by a length and a bit first time. And a 158 rated horse by 3 lengths second time

Not as much between a lot of these winners than is sometimes assumed

Punjabi, Cool Dawn, Katchit, Hors La Loi, Flakey Dove, Nortons Coin, Sublimity.

My worst GC and CH winners

CH - Hors La Loi
QM - Newmill
GC - Kicking King

Also special mentions to Bostons Angel in the RSA and Contraband in The Arkle

Just shows that a lot of horses improve for true run races on faster ground as opposed to the cautious paced races run on winter ground, thus making a true assessment difficult.

Theatreworld was only rated 144 before his first race second behind Istabraq and although slaughtered 12 lengths he was given a official rating of 162. He never got near that rating in any of his interim runs between that an his 3 1/2 length defeat by the same horse in the same race a few years later.

Yes the little battler was always that type although in truth held his own pretty well throughout the winter. And with some horses that are supposedly adverse to cheltenham itself, i reckon its often more the race than the course. BOS prime example. Once hurried along earlier he couldnt cope.

I backed Sublimity at 80/1. The horse is a legend in the moehat household [and I am still revered at my local Corals!First and last time I've been revered anywhere]. Can still remember the nerves watching him jump the last fence.

Surely Synchronised has to be one of the worst Gold Cup Winners?

Mr Mulligan and Cool Dawn were both rated in the high 170s according to the RP database (Cool Dawn's rating does look like a typo though?). Hard to judge Mr Mulligan, he only ran twice more, winning one and second in the other.

GC - Kicking King

Are you being fu*cking serious?

I won't indulge this clap-trap.

Fu*ck off.

:D

The range is wide. I have the 'so called' poor Grade 1 mentioned winners on at 165 and the best(recently) on 188. An average for me to be a 'good' and worthy Grade 1 at Cheltenham would have to be a 173+ horse in the Championship races.
