Seems very hard to believe that Alan Morgan died 10 years ago at the end of January 2004 .

I shall raise a glass to old "Bernard " when I come off the wagon on 1 Feb .

To our absent friend .

He described his interests as Trying hard, (though he makes it difficult for himself) to educate Ardross. I imagine he would say ten years on I have learned nothing !

Which means it is closing on 10 years since I joined the forum. My earliest memories of the forum are of the fondness which Alan Morgan was held in, a recollection of Swirly Chasers about AM sending taxis to his door all night after an argument stands out for me.

That and stating that I would eat my smelly hat if Albuhera won the Supreme Novices Hurdle that year (IIRC Ardross thought it perfectly possible).

That's a scandalous lie ! I backed Brave Inca .

 I think it was the uncharacteristic certainty which I had that something would improve past him which attracted the ire. It may also have been Brian H.

Here is the result of the Alan Morgan memorial race day out !

jinny was there ( as well as the odd former forum member who are best forgotten ) Merlin, The Cardiffian , archie and Krizon . Some FF members too like Ray H .

I have had a request to attach a photo of Alan's memorial day at Lingfield. I've no idea who took it. Not me as I'm in it! I think this was just after Alan's ashes were scattered across the finishing line by his widow as per his request, I believe.

I never got to meet Alan but he instigated some great banter between TH and Final Furlong when we held the regular inter-forum tipping competitions. That's how I remember him. Maybe we could have an annual comp between the 2 forums in his honour?

I spoke to Alan on the phone a few times. He was a good listener and great for bouncing ideas off.

10 years. FFS. Seems like last week.

I spoke to him for the first time on the phone a few days before he died as he was cancelling a visit to where I then worked, as he had 'man-flu' (his words) and it had gone to his chest, and with the cold weather he didn't want to push his luck. He was always so helpful on line with any kind of help anyone asked for and had such a great sense of humour, would always diffuse an argument with eloquence, wit and style and no one ever took offence. Cried my eyes out when read on here that he had died.
I would say I took the photo only because I hate having my photo taken but don't remember doing it . If not then I am hiding behind Krizon at the back. It was a great day out. I am sure Alan enjoyed it too.

10 years, you have to be kidding me! I would have gone along with Amn's guestimate of 6 or 7. I think I am hidden at the back too ( thankfully ). Here's thinking about RB's greatest ever supporter.

I'm another whose online Forum life didn't start until after Alan Morgan's passing, but in that 'reading-not-yet-posting' phase, I recall him being very fondly-remembered by the regular members of TRF at the time. He was clearly a very popular fellow (a view evidently hekd across many other sites too), and it is nice to hear people who did know him reflect and share their anecdotes and tales.

The idea from our ever-sage contributor, Tout Seul, to name the annual Cheltenham ante-post competition trophy after him, is a fitting tribute to a man who was clearly a major player in the early evolution of online horse-racing forums.

I'm delighted to help sponsor that competition, and even more delighted to have said trophy sitting on my shelf.

You'll be pleased to know that it hasn't seen so much as a dry-cloth yet. :D

Can we get a left to right - I only recognise about half of them.

I'll have a go, no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I wasn't there

L to R Colin (trigger on FF), Steve H (FF), Ray H (FF), Stodge, Tout Seul, Arkwright, Merlin The Magician, Brian H , Archie (FF), Alan's widow,Krizon,Steve M,Son of Tout Seul,Alan's daughter, The Cardiffian, jinnyj, ?

I think Ray H, Steve H, Colin(?) Stodge, TS, Arkwright, MtM, Brian H holding the bottle. Between Brian H and Alan's widow is Archie, I think I'm hidden behind him, to the right of Krizon is Steve M.
