Just seen the photo - that has to be the last time I wore a pinstripe suit to the races.
Lingfield was chosen as one of Alan's best racing memories was at the course. Delicacy forbids me from going into detail, suffice it to say that there was a race running at the time but he missed it.
The funeral was a happy celebration of Alan's too short life with more laughter than is usual at such events. The vicar was a double for Dawn French's character in 'The Vicar of Dibley' and in the pub later we all agreed that she modelled herself on her.
The coffin was carried into the church to Slim Dusty's "Oh Lord it's hard to be humble (when you're perfect in every way" and when as it was slowly disappearing behind the curtain the congregation we treated to the voice Freddie Mercury with "Don't Stop Me Now". I wasn't the only one who burst out laughing.
The car park story - I had forgotten all about that. It is extraordinary how much time has passed . I am so sorry that I never got to meet him and I remember that photo being taken but cannot understand why I am not in it unless I ended up standing behind someone taller than me ( which was most of the people there). I recall PDJ telling me that Alan had postponed an operation before his heart sadly gave out.
I was in France at the time of the funeral I am sorry I was not there.
