Equine Retirements, Long Term Injuries and Departures

Sixteen Letter was sadly pts today at Badbury Rings Point to Point after breaking a leg. I know most of you don't know the horse as he was a pointer but he ran in a few hunter chases (winning 2) notably the Aintree Foxhunters in 2023 when he had a humdinger of a fall - the only other time he fell in his life. He won 14 times pointing which was remarkable as he had a chronic win problem which they were unable to operate on due to his throat anatomy. So the fact that they managed to win so many with him was down to his genuine character.

Trained by Josh Newman and his wife Kayley Woollacott, I imagine Josh would have given every winner he's ridden this season (he's currently clear in the men's title) for this not to have happened. I have never seen a groom so devastated either especially as the horse (who looked fantastic in the paddock) was challenging when he came down.

Unfortunately today’s weather put us off our usual trip to Badbury Rings today. Awful to hear this news it must have been incredibly upsetting for all involved with the horse as well as for those who did brave the weather

RIP

Yes it was awful. Ironically Josh had the winner of the next too but I heard he hadn't wanted to go out an ride again (he wasn't on Sixteen Letters as it had been a Ladies race)
Actually the weather really wasn't too bad - you should have gone! Only started raining about the 5th race. The Bradstocks won the opener with Southfield Lily when the jockey on Scoresby which should have won in a canter was too busy showboating and got unseated - idiot! Anyway I spoke to Sarah Bradstock about Southfield Theatre and she said he's so grumpy if he isn't in full training and going racing.

Didn't realise you went pointing! Do you go to Milborne St Andrew too? Next meeting there is on 22nd March. I will be there reporting so if you do, come and say hi. In fact I am usually at Badbury (I wear a Go Pointing jacket so easily identifiable)

Not frequently but have been to Badbury Rings a few times as it’s quite close but we’ve intended to go to Milborne St Andrew which isn’t too far I think. We’ll look out for you if we do end up going

Milborne is a really good course...one of the best imo. The last meeting there at the end of Jan was an excellent meeting with ten races and loads of runners. Let me know if you do end up going

One of my cliff horses, Editeur du Gite has been retired after his run on Saturday. So relieved he’s in one piece and hope he has a very happy and well spoilt retirement. He won me plenty and his Clarence House win over Energumene and Edwardstone was pretty special for me.

I had him down as a lively outsider for the Grand Annual. Thankfully no money went down.

Not good for Pipe what with Tisdall and Drew now spending their cash with Mullins and the result being Final Demand.

There's still Gericault Roque which is being aimed at either the National Hunt Novice Handicap Chase or the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir. And David Cottin trains Jet Blue which won the Albert Bartlett trial at the December meeting. ( Richard Hoiles thinks Iceo Madrik is overpriced in the Cross Country race. )
Caroline Tisdall said after the Jet Blue race that her horses based in France were subsidising those trained in England - Devon, really - because of the higher prize money and probably also because the home team hadn't been doing so well recently.

Reading between the lines and considering the yards usual positive vibes I don't think it looks good, a real shame if so, looked a monster to these uneducated eyes.

I would hope he's just giving the whole picture so not to get anyone's hopes up. It does sound a very serious infection but he's brought horses back from some pretty bad injuries and illnesses before so will have the best veterinary advice available.

I remember actually another of Hendos horses, Angels Breath when he won so impressively at Ascot, they were drooling over him but he got struck into very badly and had 3 years off before reappearing at Sam Thomas' yard. He didn't win for him and moved to Tim Vaughan where he went Hunter Chasing with son Ed. He won at Taunton but after contesting the Cheltenham Foxhunters last week, got a leg and has been retired. Such a shame - another horse who promised so much having his career ruined by injury.

I followed Angels Breath throughout his career and must have backed him every time he ran. Apart from, that is, when he actually won not long ago. I was so relieved to read that they think he’ll recover well enough to have a nice retirement.

Glad he was retired feared the worst when he was so quickly dismounted and the screens went up.
