Equine Retirements, Long Term Injuries and Departures

Serpentine - truly the worst Derby winner in living memory has been retired aged 8 in Australia. He did manage to win again out there, a G3 at Rosehill but must go down as a very poor winner. They even gelded him to make sure he didn't hand on his lack of ability. It was an inspired ride that day by the jockey, I will grant you though.

I'd still have Oath as the worst myself and although his Derby wasn't a strong renewal I think it bottomed Serpentine. A terrific ride on the day but the horse was never the same again.

Possibly - I think the race massively affected North Light too. I watched his run next time out and he looked very uncomfortable as though he'd been badly jarred at Epsom.

It's Gino apparently covered mares aged 31, and got winners.
That's longevity.
Hyperion ,a aged 27 or 28 at the champions parade at the Horse Of The Year show got so excited at the sight of a grey showjumping mare they had to turn the lights out and remove her.
Lord Derby got such a kick out of the occasion he offered the mare's owner a free service.
Alas it was all in the mind with the great horse so no foal was made.

Didn’t Nicky lose a horse a few years ago that had had a small piece of birch work it’s way into the coffin bone?

Fingers crossed - whenever infection suddenly worsens like this I am always reminded of the brilliant filly Chriselliam dying over winter after her Fillies Mile and Breeders Cup romps .

Hope Sir Gino is rapidly on the mend.

I tend to follow It’s Ginos progeny as I met his breeder in a pub in Newmarket years ago when we were watching the football in a pub. They seem to be extremely talented but either very unlucky or a bit fragile. I’m always rooting for them though because she and her husband were so lovely.
