Professional Racing Tipster Andrew Lowrie

Professional Racing Tipster is not a thing.
I seldom post anything critical on threads like this as Simon is a good bloke and he's just trying to make a living, but I have to admit I read the above topic title and thought exactly the same as Slim.

Professional Racing Tipster and Professional Punter are poles apart.

Literally anyone can set themselves up as the former, but there's no hiding place for the latter - if you don't win, you don't eat.

Well unless you work for the RP
I'd be fairly confident you still get to eat, even if you don't tip winners, while working at the Racing Post.

None of them seems keen to display a running historical P/L, yet none of them looks particularly malnourished to me either.

Just to clarify my thoughts. Simon will be very aware of my views on any label like “professional gambler” — I think the self-proclaimed titles are meaningless in the real world. I’d go as far as to say it’s mortifying calling yourself a professional tipster. It’s like giving a nod to the aspiration of being an old-school professional punter, while admitting you’re not good enough, all in one go.

I’d be embarrassed to identify as anything betting-related. It’s a badge of shame, not pride, in modern societ

I agree 98% mate.
I just dont get having to add the "professional" bit at the start. My younger brother is a welder but he doesnt call himself a professional welder.
I had a coffee with an old mate this morning who used to be a fireman but he never referred to himself as a professional fireman. And the lad who lives out the back is a teacher but he doesnt call himself a professional teacher.

As for being embarrassed to identify with anything betting related, it all depends on how you describe it. After quitting compiling/trading and up until my pensions kicked in i used to gamble for a living. And if anybody asked what i did i used to tell them i punted for a living after first describing what i used to do and how i could still do it then and use it to my advantage.
But i can see where you are coming from and understand completely.

Tbh, I agree - I refer to myself as a "punter" (no pretentious, or hostage to fortune, prefix) and I only do that because I am, literally, shameless.

Good thread!

was going to make the professional dentist analogy, but what I’m trying to get across here is that there’s no social currency in calling yourself any of these titles. I don’t think anyone is more qualified on this than me — I’ve spent 10 years as a professional trying to explain what I do.

Self proclaimed titles are laughable imo the only title worth having are those that are bestowed on you by your peers
