Songs you'd forgot about.

I suspect the other three might be quite offended to feature on a list alongside Showaddywaddy.

I once went to watch a rock gig at the Wulfrun hall Wolverhampton, Paradise lost and Crowbar if memory serves on exiting we bumped into elderly people leaving a gig at the Civic hall which was attached to the Wulfrun. We asked them who they'd been in to see they said Showaddywaddy ( Obviously we'd never heard of them as kids in the heavy rock scene) they said it was the best gig they'd ever been to. Anyway the night ended up with us singing under the moon of love with them in some shitty bar in the town a far cry from the mosh pit we'd been in hours earlier but I have to say ive had a fondness for them ever since and a good night was had by all.

Yes, my peer group at school in the late 70s/80s were into the heavy metal scene too.

But we weren't as cool or edgy as we liked to imagine - the reality is we were all middle class geeky boys from middle class families, our parents took turns to drive us to and from gigs until one of us had a car bought for him, and inbetween gigs we'd take turns round each other's houses, listening to Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zepplin etc, while having a few cans of lager and playing Dungeons & Dragons, or even Bridge ffs!

I was at school around that time too, Ian. There was also a mini-revival of the mods v rockers (or “grebs”, as they were now known), spurred on by the film ‘Quadraphenia’. I flitted between the two, before finding my landing ground as a New Romantic/ Indie fan.

The group called Eclection were similarly short-lived and recorded one eponymous album in 1968. The line-up shown here ( from left ) is Georg Hultgreen, Gerry Conway, Kerrilee Male, Trevor Lucas, and Michael Rosen ( a Canadian ). Hultgreen later adopted the name Georg Kajanus and achieved some fame as leader of the 1970s singles group Sailor. I am fairly sure that there is no filmed footage of this group.

In 1970, Sandy Denny was a DJ on DR, Denmark’s national radio station, where she played her favourites. The recording is still available online and well worth a listen.

I still have the Eclection album. According to wiki, the name Eclection was suggested by Joni Mitchell.

Went to see Wishbone Ash the other week (or more correctly Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash). Whilst I was there I saw an old friend & when we were reminiscing I happened to mention that a few years ago I'd seen Andy Powell's Wishbone Ash at the Leeds Irish Centre. His reply? "I know, you took me there that night".

Getting old eh, who'd want it?

Wishbone Ash Blowin' Free

I remember bumping into an old friend of mine a few years ago who worked on security at Preston Guild Hall. I quizzed him into pound for pound which performance stands out as he saw hundred of big acts.
I expected him to say Bowie or Elton John maybe Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin.
His reply was Eddy Grant!!!
Mind you he did say the one moment that will stay with him forever was when Gary Glitter was performing 'Do you wanna be in my band' and fell off the f$%^ing stage

I went to see Judas Priest in Birmingham in 1983 - Rob Halford used to drive a Harley Davidson on stage before "Tyrant," their encore.

It wouldn't start (despite several attempts) so he sheepishly wheeled it on in half light.

I had rather forgotten about The Shadows song Let Me Be The One (think it was a Eurovision entry). Thought of it this morning heading out the door to work. Get to work and put the radio on - The Shadows Let Me Be The One is playing!!

Having a spot of lunch at Whitelocks in Leeds. I'm in love with a German film star by The Passions, comes on. Haven't heard it in decades. I'd forgotten what an ethereal, evocative, beautiful song it is !
Cracking track - I first heard it being played by Paul Howard, who I shared an on-campus house with at Warwick University in 1981/1982.

Paul was such a cool guy - and wickedly witty - plus he was a brilliant saxophonist and later joined a band called Mummy Calls, who had only one hit single but it was adopted as the sound track to The Lost Boys.

I was instantly mesmorised by the track when I heard it - cracking memory, thanks for evoking it.

Two things about Paul I found hilarious.

Firstly, one evening, an international student rocked up with a saxophone.

He'd heard Paul playing, and excitedly knocked on Paul's door.

"I hear you playing every night, you are genius, you show me how to play like you," he said with that wonderful naïveté so many international students from rich families had when Paul eventually opened the door.

"f%*& off," said Paul and closed the door in his bemused face.

Secondly, June 1982, Paul has failed all his first year exams and faces a September resit.

"No sweat, got all summer to revise," he declared.

Fast forward to September and I next see Paul after he emerges from his resit: "Oh, well, at least I had a year's grant money out of them," he says philosophically.

"I thought you were gonna revise all summer?" I said.

"Yeah, I was going to revise last night, but someone asked me if I wanted to go out for a drink," Paul said.

That was Paul and that was the last time I ever saw him.

Except subsequently once on an album cover and once on the telly.

Anyway, can't resist, Howard in action on his "sax:"

🤣. Showed that to the Mrs. She reckons she remembers it. She was into all things ABC, Spandau Ballet, Soft Cell type things back in the day 😊

I'm afraid I'm so 'not into' music* that I haven't even heard of a lot of the bands mentioned on here.

*As seemingly defined on here.

I must check out that Shadows tune. Might work for the old duffers' band.

I'm happy to listen to anything that gets my fingers tapping - no music allowed during foreplay... - but listen mainly to the crooner classics these days.

Terry Wogan used to play the odd AK song on his morning show. Nice voice for the right kind of song.

I'm going to check out the various versions of that as it might be something I can add to my karaoke repertoire.
