Will pay the heating bill thread

I've seen more than one live cheap , sitting in the cold etc etc when they didn't have to thinking they're somehow 'winning', an uncle being a prime example, and laughed when they croaked and saw how their kids had no qualms about spending it.
Yes, that is a really tragic outcome of feeling the need to avoid spending.

And, imo, it doesn't help when the media go on and on about people having to choose between heating and eating. The TV up here interviewed one such affected person not long ago and they were sitting in their plush enough living room with huge TV in the background and modern-looking (to me) phone on their lap.

I've no doubt some people do have that choice to make but that interview wasn't a good example.

Nothing tragic about my uncle , just a tight arse end of story, no doubt a factor as to why he had plenty money.

When he was at school I got fed up of all the washing and ironing of his school uniform.. so I waiting for the offers and bought him 14 shirts and trousers, if they came home fit for the next day, they got as roll over. when he was down to a couple left, I'd bundle wash them.

I've loved this post, not necessarily for the bet put up, but for the thread title and concept.

On a point of general principle, and even though I'm 63 next month, I refuse to put on the heating in my Hampshire Fastness unless a General Practitioner specifically informs me I will definitely expire if I don't, such is my love of seeing money in my bank account and not in that of some energy company.

So, come on, Circuit Breaker!
I am assuming that most or all of the forumites will be in a position to afford at least a fill of home heating oil or the value of a month's worth of gas when we eventually shuffle off this mortal coil. What I don't know is how many on our deathbed (or running under a train when being pursued by the irate husband of the Kanturk Ladies hockey team captain) will reflect with happiness that we didn't turn on the heating during the bleak January of 2026?

Now I'm as tight as the next guy. I walk to the library everyday to avoid buying a newspaper. But I just can't reconcile the point that I, Davies, makes above.

A wise man once advised me to fly at the front of the plane becasuse if I don't my kids will. Sound words methinks.

That's alright - you don't need to.

I'm not sure it was even a "point," tbh, more just another tongue-in-cheek contribution to a thread outlining my attitude to something.

And I'm never on a mission to have my attitude become that of others - each to their own.

Maybe Taunton and Ffos Las tomorrow, but tomorrow is when this bastard storm is due to hit, so not looking too clever for the weekend, in my (never even remotely) humble opinion.

Word from Taunton is they are confident of racing but we shall see
Thawed here nicely and I am 20 mins west of Taunton - but then again aren't we due a big old storm tomorrow?

I'm currently on log transportation duty. My mother(80) feels the cold so the fire gets lit at 9am and seems to be chewing up wood like an industrial burner. At least I'm not chopping the damn stuff but every time I turn round, the log basket is empty. She's a skinny old bird (unlike me) so feels the cold badly and as she lost out on her heating allowance (thanks Rach...) she would rather keep the woodburner in than have the heating on all day. House is very old so it takes a bit of heating anyway.

mix the wood with smokeless coke chunks and it will last longer

Your Mother is not a ā€œskinny old birdā€ but you are correct on the rest of the sentence 🤣🤣🤣 your Mother is a lovely LADY who made me feel most welcome when I stayed with you ……..and to be fair you did too 🄰 I thought your house was very cozy tbh.

Your Momma was in her 50's when you came along? Respect!
