All set for a weekend to remember at Leopardstown.
Straight Home , leased when rated 97 heads for the Paddy and Maureen Mullins Mares Hurdle.
When the option came up I thought " Great ! One rated so low will only be allowed one bad race before being sent home !"
Her Tramore debut for us had Paul using all his force, guile and bloody mindedness to barely finish third.
Listowel saw her pipped a short head, just a week after we lost Johnny Mooney , one of the syndicate members in a freak accident.
Clonmel she came good, got a 9 lb hike and duly went into hiding with this race in mind.
Rated 112 she should be better over further, is jumping 2-3 grades in class without the experience of running against better company, yet is second favourite and may be Paul's only ride in a handicap all weekend.
His course record with me is 100%, many years ago as an apprentice he won a flat handicap on Espartano, trained then by Tom Hogan. Tom's Cast A Spell is the one to beat here and at 20/1 is just too big a price.
Come on us, whatever happens we should enjoy the moment.

Well, it didn't happen.
Going a half stride too quick for her comfort zone and could not catch the first six so out of the prize money.
These big races are difficult to win no doubt.
Jumping two or three grades never a good idea ; you are better off imo sacrificing a slightly higher mark finding out if you are good enough to be running in the first place ; the few pounds extra on board will be more than compensated for by the experience gained.
She will be better over further and did us all proud trying as hard as she did.
Onwards and downwards,( for now at least !)

Springtime Legend (the daughter of the mare I have on loan and only remaining of her progeny to race) runs this afternoon in the 2.35 at Hereford. She is odds-on on the back of her last run where she nearly pegged back the winner. Form took a knock when that horse flopped next time but apparently it bled so excuses. Owners are very hopeful of SL today as it's not a strong race.

Good hunting Jinny. looks anyone of 3 could take a hand in the finish but will be rooting for you

Well I can't tell you anything about that as my effing internet crashed as the tapes went up...... I just got last flight onwards and she was miles back. But disappointing all the same. Anyone tell me?

Yes I just watched the re-run courtesy of Troods. Haven't had the verdict back from owners yet but I imagine they will be disappointed as she jumped so well at Wincanton last time.

Spoke to the owner yesterday and she sustained a pretty hard knock on her knee the first time she made a mistake that resulted in a large haematoma which vets actually were concerned enough x-ray when she got back. If she's anything like her mother who is the most reactive mare, I've ever known, she will have been upset enough to let this affect her. James Bowen said definitely not her running and to discard the race. She's now handicapped and will possibly have one more run this season if the knee is OK (x-rays were clear)

Bless her - could work in her favour I guess! She did look to stumble going into one of the early hurdles and I half wondered if she could have done something then, but as Viking said ( and you’ve seen too!) she clattered a few as well - it was like watching two different horses almost!! Hopefully it’s all resolved quickly for her and doesn’t put her off.
