The 2025 York August Meeting Day 1 (Wednesday) thread

I see that this piece is taken from Graham Cunningham's column in the Sporting Life. There's nothing wrong with sharing interesting content, but I think the author deserves a mention.

The 2025 Prix Jacques Le Marois

By the way, you can see over on the right of that results page that today's going is reported as Bon Souple. A literal translation of those two words would be Good Soft, but the problem here is to translate the concept rather than the words. I take it to mean something like "fast ground but...

Horses usually have to be in the same ownership to be coupled on the PMU.

The 2025 Great St Wilfrid Handicap

Good old Wilfrid, Rome's enforcer. The Synod of Whitby was convened to sort out, among other things, what was the correct date of Easter. The northern part of Britain, evangelised by Irish missionaries Columba, Aidan and others of the so called Celtic church, held to one date, while the...

    Forum Horse Connections

Alas there won’t be another day at the track with Moon Mariner, we’ve agreed to pull the plug with her. It’s a shame, given how well bred she is, but she doesn’t want to know about racing. She was very difficult beforehand and in a very weak race she jumped about as well as a grand piano.

Moon Mariner runs for us today at Kilbeggan. Her debut in a bumper a few weeks ago was disappointing, she showed neither any great talent nor inclination to race. Fingers crossed they've been able to teach her something since then and we will see some improvement today.

Articles the Racing Post put behind a paywall that you'd want paying to read....

Well, I’ve always enjoyed seeking out various outposts of horse racing. It can be enjoyable. Not all racing coverage has to be laser-focused on where to find the next winner.

Point Blank: Don’t Cry Tears for Thurles — It’s Too Late for Them to Get Water

I think it’s fair enough for the Molony family to call it a day. In recent years they have kept it going out of loyalty to a father and husband who died some years ago for whom the racecourse was a personal passion. That sort of motivation can only take you so far. I don’t know if the land is...

Point Blank: Don’t Cry Tears for Thurles — It’s Too Late for Them to Get Water

Why not, Magnier is already trying to buy every other piece of land going in Co Tipperary.

Point Blank: Don’t Cry Tears for Thurles — It’s Too Late for Them to Get Water

Regarding your overall argument, that the Thurles management brought this upon themselves, I don’t feel qualified to comment. But that doesn’t stop me from regretting the loss to Irish racing if it does close for good.

Point Blank: Don’t Cry Tears for Thurles — It’s Too Late for Them to Get Water

“The track responsible for the most high-profile jockey death in recent years...” Sorry Slim, but to me this is in poor taste and serves nobody, the O’Sullivan family included. I appreciate your overall contribution and I recognise that it’s in the nature of what you do that you’ll stray beyond...

    NH Chase courses?

Yes, they lost a few fixtures last winter because of dry ground.

    NH Chase courses?

Sad news indeed, but I hope it’s not a fait accompli. As the article mentions, Thurles is a key track during the winter months. The IHA will have to see whether they or someone else could take it over. Keep it on the list for the time being.

    NH Chase courses?

I remember an article years ago by Nick Mordin in the Weekender in which he concluded that Irish trained chasers being sent over to races in Britain should only be backed if they had successfully got round Punchestown. Otherwise they couldn't be relied upon to handle the generally stiffer fences...

    Galway Festival 2025

    Galway Festival 2025

Some horses love Galway and horses with Galway connections seem to love it even more. Pedigree study is very important, but for this meeting it's the human pedigrees that you need to concentrate on. Galway stables and Galway owners tend to raise their game here. We all know about the Mees, but...
