2-y-o racing 2020 (inc. First Season Sires)

He must be a big disappointment Colin. Fascinates me that the leading FSS in France is the Kendargent colt Goken. Has had 4 winners of 5 races and up until today has had the only Listed 2yo winner. As my interest in racing and breeding started in the '60s it's reassuring to see a sire from the Grey Sovereign line doing so well. A sire who was the go-to speed sire in those days.
Goken's mum is also a bit out of the ordinary with sires I like: for example Indian Ridge and his sire Ahonoora. Goken has only one line of Northern Dancer in his first five generations which makes him a super outcross. Will his produce show the class to justify people sending their Northern Dancer saturated mares to him?

There were no FSS winners yesterday but Muker (MEHMAS) did his valiant best to make me eat my words of yesterday's post.

I can’t say I was impressed with any of the Ascot winners. Obviously, it’s a strange old season and I don’t think we’ve seen a lot of quality yet. The Lir Jet may be the best colt and there was a filly, Frenetic, who won at Navan that I was quite taken with.

Thanks Colin, it's useful having your perspective.
I quite liked the Queen Mary winner and thought Qaader might be the one to improve most out of the Coventry. Didn't think much of the Chesham Stakes. I'll look out for Frenetic.

The World has gone mad. It's 22 days into the turf season and Michael Stoute has had not one but two 2yo winners. He often (in a normal season) doesn't have a 2yo runner before the Newmarket July meeting. Has he got a new assistant?

I really liked Battleground. Big, scopey colt who has the most beautiful fluid walk around the paddock.

Even though I have not been posting the 2-y-o racing reviews (I was finding it a bit of a chore) I have been looking at all the races and noting interesting runs. One of those, Black Sparrow, runs in the Bath 5.40. Black Sparrow ran green on his debut at Chelmsford but despite never really travelling comfortably he kept on well to take third. He was 80/1 that day but there is some money for him this morning 5/1 from 8/1. Not such an each-way price now but the money might be significant. A couple of negatives; the going good to firm this morning is likely to firm up considerably in this weather, the other negative is that the horse who finished second in the Chelmsford race, Baby Sham , didn't frank the form at Kempton last Sunday.

Apologies for getting the horse's gender wrong. Anyway, Black Sparrow didn't want to play today after being very reluctant to load she was strong-armed in eventually but she wouldn't have it and got her head out under the front and was withdrawn. Money saved probably.

One that caught my eye on her debut run at Fairyhouse last week is Takeko. This daughter of MEHMAS "had no luck in running", not the quickest away she raced on the inside of the field until her rider "looked for a run", Billy Lee was not able to find one until the final furlong the filly ran on to pinch fourth place on the line. I don't think that Henry de Bromhead has had many 2-y-o winners but if Billy Lee can find a clear path today she might have a chance. She's 4/1 at the moment, the favourite, Friendly, by Galileo and trained by A.P.O'Brien is making her debut. Galileos trained by Aiden tend not to win on debut (think you could probably turn a profit laying them). Of course, having written that, she is almost certain to win.

Two races of interest for me today.

First one is rather speculative but the odds of 33/1 available at the moment are tempting. In the Lingfield 4.20 Porfin will be having his third run, made his debut at Newmarket where he started at 100/1 and justified his odds by finishing last of the ten runners. Reappeared at Windsor 12 days later and this time odds of 12/1 and finished an acceptable 6th of 10 meeting "trouble in running" and not punished unduly ran on. As I say speculative but not without hope of at least a place.

Frenetic, Curragh 6.45, is a very different type of bet, short priced favourite (5/4) in a Listed event. I am hoping that she will confirm the very good impression she made on debut at Navan earlier this month. Not sure that she is a betting opportunity but am hoping that she will foolow up that first win.

Porfin given, what I believe is called in the trade, "an unenterprising ride" by Shane Kelly (who'd have thought it?), dwelt at the start, trundled around, some headway when it was much too late. Probably not a truly objective description but it is not too far from the truth, the lack of interest in the betting market, 22/1 > 33/1 says a lot.

On the other hand. Dictionary definition of 'frenetic' - fast and energetic in a rather wild and uncontrolled way. Well the racehorse Frenetic is certainly fast and energetic but I didn't see much lack of control. Drawn in the outside stall, the nearest to the stand rail, she was taken right over to that stand rail and led or disputed the lead throughout she was just too powerful for the rest of the field and fresh air finished second, she won by five lengths. Was there a faster strip where she raced?

I've a couple running at Hamilton, think it's the first race. Put up my thoughts later.
