At the Start
With many thanks to Eleonora Duse and Archie I have cobbled together a list of new sires. I have posted some information and thoughts but as yet (I am hopeful) I have not found a market for this.
Here they be:
AIKEN Best RPR 116 (12-16f)
Winner of the 12f. Listed Buckhounds Stakes on heavy at Ascot in 2012 and later that season ran second to Rite Of Passage in Group 3 Sipco Long Distance Cup, again, at Ascot on soft ground. It seems unlikely that this son of Selkirk, out of a Sadler’s Wells mare, will be producing too many precocious 2-y-os.
ANIMAL KINGDOM 126 (8-10f)
The winner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby and the 2013 Dubai World Cup ended his career with a disappointing effort in the 2013 Queen Anne at Ascot. Very classy animal who obviously enjoyed racing on artificial surfaces. Unlikely to have enough runners.
CAMELOT 126 (12f)
As you will probably know, he was the winner of the 2012 Derby (good to firm) by an easy 5 lengths from Main Sequence. This son of Montjeu (out of a Kingmambo mare) followed up by winning the Irish Derby by two lengths from Born To Sea on soft/heavy ground. Didn’t quite show the brilliance of Epsom again but did win a 10f. Group 3 as a 4-y-o. Plenty of class but perhaps not going to have enough fast youngsters.
CITYSCAPE 126 (8-10f)
Obtained his best RPR when winning the Group ! Dubai Duty Free by 4.25 lengths from Mutahadee on good ground at Meydan. This son of Selkirk (Distant View mare)managed to win races in four different countries and should have have plenty of 2-y-o winners.
DAWN APPROACH 128 (8f)
Unbeaten as a 2-y-o, the winner of the first race of the 2012 season. Unlikely to have stayed the Derby distance but gave himself no chance by pulling wildly for his head for the first half of the race before weakening and finishing tailed-off. Best rating achieved when second, beaten half a length, to Toronado in the Sussex Stakes. Previously he had beaten a short head in the St. James Palace at Royal Ascot. Must be one of the favourites in the first crop market.
DECLARATION OF WAR 124 (8-10f)
Very smart 8-10f. performer, winner of the 2013 Juddmonte International at York on good to firm ground. Went on to run third to Mucho Macho Man in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on the dirt at Santa Anita. A son of War Front out of a Rahy mare looks to have an excellent pedigree to produce high class 2-y-os but as he stands in the USA he’s unlikely to have enough runners to top the table.
EPAULETTE 121 (6-7f)
Closely related to last year’s very successful first season sire Helmet. Possibly put up his best performance when winning a 7f. Group 1 in Oz in 2013. Should have plenty of 2-y-o winners.
FARHH 127 (8-10f)
Had the misfortune to be born in the same year as Frankel otherwise he would have had two more Group 1s to his name. As it was he had to settle for the 2013 Lockinge and Champion Stakes. He managed to amass earnings of 1.3 million pounds and he never finished out of the first three in his races. Likely to have classy individuals but will they be precocious enough?
FINJAAN 118 (7-8f)
This son of Royal Applause (out of a Dayjur mare) probably put up his best performance when beaten two ‘noses’ to finish third in the 2008 Dewhurst. Didn’t really progress from there and his only subsequent win was the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood as a 3-y-o. There is plenty of speed in the pedigree.
HAVANA GOLD 113 (8-10f)
A son of Teofilo who won the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall at two and the Group 1 Jean Prat over a mile as a 3-y-o.
IMPERIAL MONARCH 118 (12f)
Being by Galileo out of a Slip Anchor mare suggests that his offspring are unlikely to be speed machines.
INTELLO 125 (10f)
Beautifully bred, being by Galileo out of a Dunhill mare. He put up his best RPR when third to Treve in the 2013 Arc, beaten just over 5 lengths, the 12f. being a step too far for him. Previously a comfortable winner of the 10f. Prix Du Jockey Club. Should get classy youngsters but probably not precocious enough.
LETHAL FORCE 124 (6f)
Very speedy animal who won the 2013 July Cup in record time (admittedly on good to firm ground). The previous month he had won the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot. An obvious candidate to produce plenty of early winners.
MAZAMEER 108 (6f)
Posted his best RPR in a 6f. Group 3 at Deauville. Didn’t progress as a 3-y-o and his only subsequent win was a Listed race at Maison-Lafitte.
MOST IMPROVED 118 (8f)
Smart 2-y-o who finished a close third to Parish Hall in the 2011 Dewhurst. Put up much his best effort as a 3-y-o when winning the St. James’ Palace on good to soft ground. Never showed that sort of form again even though he finished his career with Aiden O’Brien. Surprising that he found a place at Coolmore.
RECITAL 118 (10f)
Smart 2-y-o who took the 2010 Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud by five lengths. Won the Group 2 Derrinstown Trial at three. Probably found the trip too far when sent off 5/1 for Pour Moi’s Derby, finishing five lengths back in sixth place. Went to race in the desert but showed nothing in five attempts.
RED JAZZ 121 (7-8f)
As a 3-y-o he ran a close third in the 2010 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II, then went on to win a Group 3 at Newmarket. Never quite showed that form again but did win a 7f. Listed event at Haydock as a 5-y-o. Could have an outside chance of becoming the top first season sire.
SHANTARAM 111 (12-14f)
Stoutly bred winner of the 2010 Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket. You would think his produce will improve with age and distance.
SWISS SPIRIT 116 (5-6f)
A very good Group 3 winning sprinter. He beat Kingsgate Native over 5f. on good to firm at Newbury subsequently finishing a neck second to that same horse in a Group 1 on firm ground at Haydock. Except for the fact that he didn’t seem to appreciate soft ground he looks to have all the attributes to make a successful sire of 2-y-os.
TOUGH AS NAILS 110 (6f)
Eight races as a 2-y-o and successful second time up over five on soft ground at Tipperary in April. Finished second to Lilbourne Lad in the 2011 running of the Railway Stakes over six at the Curragh. Didn’t show a lot in his two races as a 3-y-o. Bit of an unknown quantity.
UNIVERSAL 117 (12f)
Returned his best RPR when winning the Group 2 Princess of Wales on the July Course at Newmarket. Unplaced in his three runs as a 2-y-o and unlikely to produce early and speedy offspring.
WORTHADD 123 (8-11f)
Started his career in Italy and was third in his only race as a 2-y-o. Won six of his seven races in his second season, and on his first run in Britain ran second to Canford Cliffs in the 2011 Group 1 Lockinge. Was trained by Sir Mark Prescott Bt when winning a Group 3 in Germany. High class son of Dubawi out of a Rahy mare.
