Arkle , A Tale of Two Bankers
My good racing mate Paddy Mehigan, whom I met while at a bus stop waiting for a 46A bus to Leopardstown , told me a toe curling story about this race.
One day racing years ago he got talking to a stranger beside him on the grand stand.
An eager punter he informed the gent of his bet as each race came up, the gent having a different opinion, had picked all winners to Paddy's losers.
Then he told Paddy he not longer bet , which puzzled Paddy greatly , given the man's interest and obvious knowledge.
The gent told how he used to bet but came unstuck, owing a lot of money to a lot of people.
He worked as a bank teller and at the time worked a half day every other Saturday.
The 1964 Gold Cup was run on a Saturday, a one off to accommodate the crowds.
The teller cleaned out his money drawer at closing time, went to a travel agents and bought a one way passenger ferry ticket to England.
He had his last ever bet with the remaining money, knowing that after the race he would be throwing away one of the two tickets .
He walked the streets that afternoon unable to watch the great race .
Luckily his last bet was on Arkle and the ferry ticket was not used.
The other banker ,of course was Mark Hely- Hutchinson who rode Himself in two Bumpers and is the only jockey to ride the horse in a race without winning.
He dined out on the infamy for years after,
