A Day (Or Evening) At The Races

I don't know whether it's a meeting any of you guys ever do, but I'm doing my annual pilgrimage to Market Rasen for Summer Plate Day in mid-July. It's a very good card with the Summer Plate and the Summer Hurdle, plus two valuable Class 3's.

Roddy Owen, formerly of this Parish, has had the winner of the big race 3 or 4 times in recent seasons, and I hope to catch up with him there. Happy to pass on best wishes for any of you who know him or remember him.

I’m pleased to hear that Roddy is still out and about. Please pass on greetings. He did me a huge favour one time by arranging tickets for a Wales v Ireland match in Cardiff on the Saturday of Cheltenham week. Does he have any ownership involvement these days?

I most certainly will Art. He still has three or four in training I think Art. The best known are Reserve Tank that was formerly with Joe Tizzard, and more notable Francky Du Berlais, still going strong at 11. He won the Summer Plate a couple of times, and will be back for another try a week on Saturday.

I used to live/work between Windsor and Kempton so went to both loads in the past, but haven't been to either for a while but gonna give Kempton a revisit soon.

Have been to about 20 courses and for pure chilled day out I prefer Windsor to anywhere I think

For big courses I prefer Cheltenham to Ascot, a view reinforced by a recent visit to the former

I often find its who you go with rather than the venue that makes the day. Rumour has it that you were in top class company on your most recent visit.

speaking to strange men outside hotels early in the morning can lead to 12 hr drinking and gambling sessions and a chunk of money being won

Unless your 3 pints in by 11am you have to ask have you ever really been to Cheltenham ?
Indeed, and kebabs by 1pm when you still have the rest of the afternoon and the evening meeting at Wolverhampton in a bookies.

In the pantheon of horse race days out that one will take some beating !

I'm a republican and I like the Flat just as much as the Jumps, so what was great for me personally about being at Windsor today was it evoked memories, not just of Windsor, but also of other lost Jumps circuits like Towcester, Wolverhampton and Nottingham from the old ITV7 days.

Enjoy!

I've been to a few Kempton AW evening meetings in the last 12 months - they can get a bit repetitive after a while, but I saw Rebels Romance win there just over a year ago and this year's 2,000 Guineas winner ran there in April.

:) I led my first winner up at Windsor ( 18th Jan 1995, just looked it up!) it was the last race of the day and SO dark by the time I’d left the vets box! We had to walk along the car park to get back to the stables which was fun in the dark with a dark horse and me in mostly dark clothing 😆
Happy days.

I like the people watching, there was a guy there about 40ish at a table that seemed to be taking it more serious than most, as he had a big tablet looking at various screens on betfair between races and going out to the parade ring. But he wasn't doing in play as he'd always switch that off and watch the races on the screen nearest.

I did a check to see what the latency was between the betfair video on my phone (connected to my mobile provider not the course wifi) and the race actually live in front of me, was max 2 seconds. I wonder if that varies according to the course and how far away you are from Betfair head office on the banks of Thames (dunno if it's moved since I was there years ago)

At least I could buy snickers and coffee at the kiosk opposite the parade ring without using may card, that fkd me off so much at Newbury!!
