London is currently in a severe alert state. An abandoned car found in Haymarket said to contain an explosive device.

Early news seems to point to a standard bomb (as opposed to a chemical one) being found in a car at 2am this morning.

The device did pose a "real threat".

You wouldn't know it on the tube except that Picadilly Circus station is shut.

I love this quote on the BBC site from "an intelligence source":

All options, including the Irish, are open at this stage

I'm not sure if it's the generic use of "the Irish" or the mindset that whoever gets the blame is an "option" that pisses me off most.

Where are all the people who are quick to shout racism now?? Or does racism not count where "the irish" are involved..... Makes me sick

More from the BBC report:

Bouncers from a nearby nightclub said they saw the car being driven erratically before it crashed into a bin. They said the driver then got out and ran off.

These terrorist masterminds are truly to be feared.

Suicide mission? Or just a complete moron driving it? Sounds to me like a suicide mission that went wrong, given that it was driven into something, but judging by the bomb itself, Gas Cylinders and Nails, sounds like something that was going to be parked up and detonated at a busier time...more casulties given it was a nail bomb...

News says it was done to coincide with Gordon Browns first day in office...why?? What has he done?

So much speculation; 99% of which will be looked back on as complete nonsense in a couple of weeks time.

BTW, that line I quoted earlier has now been removed from the BBC news report.

There was petrol and gas cylinders in the car along with nails.

An ambulance crew spotted it, because there was smoke inside the car.

Are they giving ambulance personnel the power to stop people smoking in their cars as well now? :what:

Thats great.

Well done Gordon, terror averted on your third day in power. What a great leader and what a coincidence.

Yes, you are not the only one to have picked up on that, Uncle Goober. They were discussing this point on the radio this morning. Some strong rumours now about how some policies could be rushed through in light of this extraordinary terror alert. A car (a Mercedes) found abandoned outside a busy London nightclub containing nails and cannisters, lots of disruption on the streets of London, all on a Friday. But, it's OK as nothing acutally happened thanks to a very brave policemen who disabled the device by leaning into a car and removing the attached mobile phone and an eagle eyed ambulance crew spotting smoke coming out of a window in the first place. :suspect:

I have to admit, although it could all be true it does all seem to be a little too convenient... doesn't it? shrug:: Perhaps more will be revealed when they catch these latest terrorists.

...............can anyone suggest what the smoke was that the ambulance men saw?

Because as you know, there is no smoke without fire................and there was petrol and gas cylinders in that car!!!

We are all getting rather cynical, aren't we!

I believe due to the huge amounts of petrol in the car, it was...eh..."steaming" for want of a better word...fumes from the petrol basically :suspect:

I am sorry to laugh :shy: but terrorists/suicide bombers really shouldn't go to Glasgow. It appears the police were called cnuts by bystanders for attempting to save their lives. Also, evidently some "helpful" Glaswegians tried to help the terrorists that were on fire (they had evidently set fire to themselves) by jumping on them very hard - just to put out the flames of course.

I must admit, my admiration for the Scottish has increased tenfold. It was of course pretty high anyway! :)
