I know dozens of people who've been to Thailand's jungles, explored the Mongolian hinterland via the Orient Express, sailed the seven seas in a variety of cruise ships, peppered the vast continents with road trips, rail journeys, and dodgy plane overflights. I've been on the Kafue River in a boat whose engine failed, heading for hippos and rapids. I've overnighted as the only woman on board from Manama to Dammam via an Arab-packed dhow, which became stuck on a sandbank. (Hence the unplanned overnight stay.) I've even been to Johannesburg without getting shot.

However, I haven't yet ventured across the damp borders of Norfolk into what I am assured is duelling banjoes country. I plan to do so soon, so if anyone can advise me on currency exchange rates, a place to stay where there's a lock on the door, the safety of the drinking water, and whether I need to arm myself with a handgun beforeheand, I'd be most grateful.

Surely K you should be going to Yarmouth - a nice day on the beach, lots of amusement arcades and a racetrack run by Northern Racing where the horses race for buttons .

Or you could stay at home !

Serioso - all I remember about Thetford is lots of conifers and coming across an adder on a walk through loads of pine needles.

How bizarre. I was just about to post the exact same thing about Adders!

Seems deepest darkest Norfolk is snake infested and it may be wise to stay somewhere safer Krizon. With the possible problem with locks you highlighted I'm sure you wouldn't want to wake up in the middle of the night to find something slithering all over you. :what:

I believe Thetford was where they filmed Dad's Army.

There is a statute of Thomas Paine in the town.

ARE YOU SURE!!!It was not your accountant........................ :P :D

Ive stayed at GREAT!!! YARMOUTH a few times only snakes I seen were the human kind..............

I spose! You could play SNAKES and ADDERS if BOARD.......... :angy:

Went near there once to one of the Center Parcs. Restaurant there had a sliding roof and subsequently I believe the plaza actually burnt down. Went to Yarmouth races for an evening meeting, bundle of laughs that was, and Newmarket races on the July course.

They do evening boat trips around the broads which is a chance to nose in on some of the luxurious homes around the broads.

I went to Yarmouth once in the early 80s - Cecil and Lester had four winners - shelling peas sort of day - however three were odds on

"Adders are much cheaper than my accountant ! "
...who is cheaper than his solicitor!

"Take a close relative with you to marry "
There are two things in life one must not try, not even once - incest and Morris Dancing.

Wasn't that try everything once- except incest and Morris Dancing ?

Tell that to the E.Dead Group - inbred and bells everywhere on their toes - so Honest Tom tells me...

I don't have a solicitor . Useless bunch of tossers - never do as they are told.

I ought to go to Great Yarmouth - my mother's told me enough times that I was 'made' there on my father's birthday! norty

I'm actually going to see dear BARRANTES at the stables she's at while visiting ICEMAN at Cheveley Park, before she goes back to Somerset. I've got several days off and it's a much shorter trip than hauling out to the Southwest, plus it's not a county I'm aware of visiting before (well, not in full human form, anyway!). Some ideas there - and I quite like snakes, so I won't mind seeing adders if they're about.

You think??

Well, fellow forumites, it may be several months before we see Krizon contributing again to this forum as she sets off on her trek to East Anglia.....

Don't forget to ring Chris Richardson at Cheveley well in advance of your trip, Jon, and ask to see ICEMAN - they'll parade all the stallions for you while you're there if they aren't too busy. I think PARTY POLITICS is still alive and he might be loafing around too.

Get Reid to recommend some other stud visits as well.

There are now some road in East Anglia, I have seen them myself Kri, Kings Lynn is not too far from Thetford.

The women in Thetford are not the best though, webbed feet are the norm!!!

In Thetford, there is:

Bacon (but not for much longer) and Jeyes Fluid

An excellent little business dealing in classic Land Rovers

A lot of Portuguese people

Nice town centre surrounded by less attractive modern housing estates

Try Visit Breckland for info on stuff to do in and around Thetford - including a Dad's Army walking tour! :D

Thanks! Good idea to go and see ICEMAN, Songsheet. If I throw myself howling onto the ground, I might get us the nomination for free! No, didn't think so...

It doesn't sound quite as lifeless as I'd imagined - a tour round the Jeyes Fluid factory would pretty much set the top hat on the tour, I reckon! :D

O'bruv, why do the women of Thetford have webbed feet?

As Thetford is supposed to be Britain's driest town, it seems a most curious evolutionary development.
