Anyone dumped their landline?

Our flats' ex-manager has moved into the block of flats where I'll be from next week. I had a look at her new set-up and was surprised to see she'd dumped her landline and now only uses a mobi, courtesy of Orange, and has a laptop with a dongle for b/b. The set-up seemed cheaper than my landline/broadband/tv cable package from Virgin, with my mobile only being topped up for Vodaphone about once a year. She said all her calls, texts, and broadband cost £30 a month (through Orange).

Has anyone else here gone totally mobile and, if they have, can they give me any pros and cons? At the mo I have landline phones in the lounge and bedroom, and the mobi is only used for travel info (I'll be late/I'll be early/I've lost my way).

It does seem that a lot of people aren't using landlines any more and I guess all I need to do is to recondition my thinking about having a phone that can go everywhere with you, round the house, the garden, and the car. I doubt I'd carry it into every social occasion, though, unless I didn't mind being pestered by calls.

Anyone recommend saying goodbye to their landlines? And any service providers to recommend, too, please?

Nope - I am keeping mine - what if the mobile fails or battery runs out! Also fixed line broadband seems more reliable than mobile where I live.

How weird is this - the landline's dead this morning! Actually had to use the mobi for a normal call. Good point, Arders. I always think of my mobi as a backup to the landline (as per just now), rather than a full-time item. I suppose a bit belt 'n' braces.

I think once I move, I'll give it up on a 3-month trial basis and just use the mobile. As Virgin has managed to balls things up by disconnecting the landline a week early, I'm getting quite used to the mobi, anyway. Jill (the ex-mgr) says you get a new phone every 18 months or so, and as my Nokia is about 5 years old, I can probably donate it to a museum. Cheers, Luke, I realise what Ardross is saying, but I think it's something I'm going to give a go and see how I like it. It's just the fear of Texting and working the bits I currently don't understand I have to overcome!

Just keep an eye out if your phone has predictive text, and automatically changes words when it thinks it needs to - you know what happened to me the other night...

It does have predictive, Troods, and twice friends have tried to stop it sending rubbish when I've attempted Texting - but it seems to refuse to stop predicting! Maybe when I've settled in I'll get something a bit more tractable - this has a will of its own.
