Have decided to return to the saddle, so I am looking for a reliable, bomb-proof cob mare, between 15 - 16hh, under 15 years old.

As I'm surrounded by bays, browns and chesnuts, I have decided to take a completely shallow approach and want either a grey or coloured cob (well, they'll be pink by the time they've rolled in our mud a few times...). Got to be a mare.

While she's got to be up to carrying some weight, I don't want one of those really OTT shire/Perceron crosses!

So if anyone on here in the South of the country knows of anything, please PM me! She'll have a great home here, I think, as several on here can confirm, but I know good cobs are like hen's teeth, so I think it's going to be a long search.

I thank you!

Look Julie - OK you weren't 100% happy with James Davies but ...........

The H&H is always a good place to look for horses - always my first port of call. Their website has a comprehensive database - tap in all your requirements and hey presto! Donkey & Dog horse database

The other idea is to maybe get in touch with your local police force & ask about ex-police horses. My aunt is on her second horse from the Met and is on the list for another to keep Trojan company. They're all fairly big mind, and most are retired, but you can get ones that aren't. My aunt was offered a 12yo mare in recent months who had enough of a dodgy back that she couldn't work for the police but could be ridden for hacking, etc.

Ha Bloody Ha!!

By the time I was the right weight, Ellie would be dead of old age...

Thanks Dom - have already tried D & D but the Police horse idea is a good one!

I was amazed Jules - out of curiosity I searched on cobs, between 15-16hh, nationwide & got just 4 results - all geldings! I had no idea cobs were so heard to get hold of nowadays - a few years ago they were all that was on offer!

Here's a pic pf my aunt's old fella, Trojan. As you can see, he's kinda large! Look at the size of that head!! She keeps hassling me to get down there & ride him again, says he's acting like a 6 year old at the moment, he's 16!

EDIT - took it out, it's an enormous pic!

I was just showing Dom this the other day, although its about 15 minutes from me so it may be a little bit far away for you; they do deliver all over the UK tho B)

The guy imports from Ireland, IMO they're a bit expensive but as you say, cobs are hard to come by. There's new horses on there every week, I drive by there on the way to my parents, and the fields are full of coloureds

http://www.westviewstables.co.uk/horses.php i've fallen in love with Dooley

Saw this too, LE - I was pretty amazed when I saw the prices!!

If I get really stuck, though, I might ask you to look for me!!!

You could try Lyn Russell too cept shes in Surrey I think, cant remember her website address off the top of my head, but she usually advertises on horsequest (and she was looking for a groom the other week in H&H, so you could get her number there!! - will try to find it.....

Jules, you know that if you should happen to f - er, depart involuntarily from the saddle - off one of the ex-Polizei horses, the climb back up might be - how shall I put it - just a little taxing, without letting your stirrup leather down to knee height! Save yourself a load of effort, get a 13.2 h.h. roughie-toughie of uncertain heritage, and you can just chuck a leg across directly!

Funny you shoud say that Kri - Hector's (well, he's called Trojan but I prefer Hector!!) mounting block is a step ladder!! Then again, he is 18.1hh.....

My step-daughter's 4yo Welsh Section D is for sale. Unfortunately he's a gelding and bay.
She hasn't had much response from H&H adverts so I may suggest she looks at those other sites.

Good luck in your search Songsheet.
I find that the more reasonably priced cobs are all over here in N.Ire, although they are bought up by the traders and then sent over the water and sold for silly money! My pal does a roaring trade that way, he travels all over Ireland for them then makes a killing. They are definitely getting harder to find too, especially for a reasonable price these days sadly. To be honest i would stay away from most Horse sale websites as most people are chancing their arm with some of the asking prices IMHO. The weekly farming papers are usually worth a look mind.

I'm one of the lucky ones that already has a fantastic sweetheart of a coloured cob all snuggled up in one of my stables and he's priceless

Hope you find what you are looking for and keep us updated. :)

Do you get the Free Ads paper around your way, Jules? In my area it's usually a good bet for horses, has loads of them every week and some are pretty reasonably priced as they're local ads, too.
