For me it's Closing Time by Tom Waits. Ice cream man is a close second
" Love needs a transfusion , let's shoot it full of wine, fishin for a good time starts with throwin in your line "
Ice cream Man - "When you're tired and and your hungry and you want something cool I'll give you something better than a swimming pool

thankyou stars by Katie Melua or Better Together - Jack Johnson get my vote of the recent ones - there are loads of great oldies, but A nightingale sang in Berkeley square is up there....

I like "Have I Told You Lately" too, as well "God only Knows" by the Beach Boys, "Wichita Lineman" by Glen Campbell, "At my most beautiful" by REM, "Kathy's Song" by Paul Simon, "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley and many more.

I am a total sap for love songs so I won't embarrass myself with my lengthy list of cheesy 'moonies'.

Lover' you should have come over by Jeff Buckley is up there and Careless Whisper by George Michael.

It depends on the genre.

Cole Porter wrote some of the best and most sophisticated: I've Got You Under My Skin, Every Time You Say Goodbye, You Do Something To Me, Could It Be You.

Some of the traditional love songs are beautiful, such as Danny Boy, She Moves Through The Fair (but definitely not the Van Morrison version - he should have been charged with at least manslaughter for that effort) and Nora/Maggie.

Patsy Cline's version of Crazy scores high on pathos while keeping it within acceptable limits - not normally a strong point of C&W.

Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward: a touch of poignancy in the lyrics with a hint of tragedy and melancholy, pitch perfect for the type of song, and some well crafted and imaginative arrangements to give it a bit of intrigue musically

Moondance for me is Van's best love song, although Brown Eyed Girl is a belter. I also agree with PDJ re Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. For those not familiar with it, Rufus Wainwright sings a version on the soundtrack to Shrek.

On a less highbrow note, I always loved Zoom by Fat Larry's Band and Tantalise by Jimmy The Hoover (not exactly a love song, but so what?)

Don't think anyone will disagree about Hallelulah, Jeff Buckley had one of the most beautiful voices ever.

Also truly madly deeply by Savage Garden, I dont want to miss a thing by Aerosmith, without you i'm nothing by Placebo, Goodbye to you by Michelle Branch, Wild Horses by Jewel (a cover of the rolling stones)

The George Michael version of 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' reduces me to tears every time so I'd better take some tissues with me in December incase he sings it  I'm also a fan of 'On And On' by the Longpigs and 'Never Tear Us Apart' by INXS.

Not your usual choice but mine is Right Down The Line by Gerry Rafferty

You know I need your love, you got that hold over me
As long as I got your love, you know that I’ll never leave
When I wanted you to share my life, I had no doubt in my mind
And it’s been you, woman, right down the line.

I know how much I lean on you, only you can see
The changes that I’ve been through have left their mark on me
You’ve been as constant as the Northern Star, the brightest light that shines
It’s been you, woman, right down the line.

I just wanna say this is my way
Of telling you everything I could never say before
Yeah this is my way of telling you that everyday I’m loving you (so much more)

‘Cause you believed in me through my darkest night
Put something better inside of me, you brought me into the light
Threw away all those crazy dreams, I put them all behind
And it was you, woman, right down the line.

I just wanna say this is my way
Of telling you everything I could never say before
Yeah this is my way of telling you that everyday I’m loving you (so much more)

If I should doubt myself, if I’m losing ground
I won’t turn to someone else, they’d only let me down
When I wanted you to share my life, I had no doubt in my mind
And it’s been you, woman, right down the line.
