Paul Nicholls has revealed that Noel Fehily will ride Silviniaco Conti in the Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday.

"GOOD TO SOFT (Chases to be run on the Inner Flat Course. The distance of Chases increases by 1/2 furlong per circuit, compared to normal configuration. Hurdles to be run on what is normally the Chase Course)." wtf??

Ten remain at the five-day stage: Bobs Worth, Cloudy Too, Cue Card, Dynaste, Long Run, Prince De Beauchene, Roi Du Mee, Silviniaco Conti, The Giant Bolster, Tidal Bay

What's wrong with Jacob? I'm not convinced Nicholls has any faith in his new jockey lineup.

Hadn't read the report. On Zarkandar. Thought he would have ridden SC but Al Ferof running at Ascot.

Quote from PN:

Nothing should be read into the fact that Noel rides what was probably our stable star last season. He has ridden Conti before, in fact when winning on him in the 2m4f hurdle at Ascot three years ago that Zarkandar goes for on Saturday, as well as a Persian War.

It simply makes sense for our number one jockey to go to Ascot to ride two of our best horses in Zarkandar - who Daryl obviously knows so well having won on him four times, including the Triumph - and Al Ferof, who he has ridden a lot at home in his comeback from injury.

T'was always intended this year's race would be over 3m 1f.

This really does look a cracking renewal. Bobs Worth has never let me down over the years winning me plenty of cash and I'm looking forward to his re-appearance.
I fear Dynaste the most however.
It begs the question whether Haydock will play to Dynaste's strengths?
Is Haydock such a sharp track as some make it out to be, say like Kempton, and if so, could it play to a speedier horse like Dynaste's strengths??

Thoughts?

The new Haydock chase course is sharp enough, alright, and 1/2 a furlong or so shorter than the Kempton circuit. However, this weekend's race will be over the hurdles track (i.e; outside the normal chase track) which will make for a slightly stiffer test.
Fwiw, I don't believe Bobs Worth would have even been entered otherwise, and Cue Card might well stay in his box.

I'm a massive Bobs Worth fan and almost want him to get beaten here so his price for the Gold Cup will drift, and there he will not be beaten.

Initally I preferred SC but there has been so much talk of Haydock not possibly suiting Bob's Worth that he may end up being worth a bet - especially with reet's comments about the course being used. I will back Cue Card if the ground is ok whatever happens. This is a massive step for Dynaste.

don't think cc will go. tizzard seemed a tad unsure on sunday's interview. if he did and its good ground....could be an e/w play.

bw is solid and i would be more worried about the gold cup having a long habit of getting right to the bottom of horses than the track. element of caution but the 5/2 showing tonight isn't too shabby.

long run. could be well past his best days now after so many tough races. can't back him but wouldn't be too shocked to see him run into a place.

conti is interesting but thought there might be a bit more juice in his price than it's currently showing. no bet.

no idea what to expect from tidal bay. walsh not being on board is a neg in a race like this but std did a grand job at wetherby in fairness to him. still think he's likely to be too far tailed off coming to the last couple of fences though.

dynaste could be a bet but again i was hoping for a little more juice in his price stepping up to this kind of company for the first time. haydock form and ran very well first time out last two seasons.

in summary it's a great race if the principles turn out and nothing to get too serious with as a betting proposition for me. if pushed atm i'd go dynaste e/w but cue card running on good ground might sway my pick.

Cue Card would be a massive place lay in my ante-post book - if there were such a thing.
Even at its best, the Haydock turf is not nearly as forgiving as Kempton's, and the forecast frost means it's unlikely to get any faster than the current g/s, and may well be holding.
Joe Tizzard seems to think he'll stay, his father's prevarication about how well he stayed at Ascot, and in the RyanAir, a lot less convincing, and - even if he were to run in the likely depleted field - I doubt he'll last home well enough to threaten for the places..
