THE same as LORD STEVENS is saying read the thread I posted it for it to be read he and I think the same I don't find that strange at all or my philosophy being unusual................. like I said don't change the debate............
 
It's not me who is being inconsistent - I have never been in favour of capital punishment because there is no proof whatsoever that it acts as a deterrent and I am aware that there have been far too many mistakes, or as Gareth would prefer "mistakes". These alone would make it exceptionally dangerous to put the decision into the hands of the police (and, by the way, I can find you many senior policemen who take a different view to Stevens).

So, I still haven't understood you. Are you saying that there was a time when you were not in favour of capital punishment? Even though this was a time of London being shot up, many parts of the country being blown up, children being brutally murdered, policemen being killed in the line of duty and murders being committed in furtherance of theft?

A yes or no will do.

Would someone please explain to me what benefits there would be if the police carried firearms?

If we're using the case in point - Bradford - as an example, correct me if I'm wrong but that may have meant that the two policewomen - who were rookies - would have been carrying guns. So when they tried to prevent or apprehend (as the details are still not clear as to exactly what happened) the criminals escaping - at 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon in a presumably busy shopping area - crossfire would have ensued - meaning not only the policewomen but presumably anyone else in the vicinity may well have ended up shot also.....

Well, that's good, then - even more mass hysteria and hypocracy for our beloved newspapers and Joe Public to feed off.....

Not carrying guns means that our police force is forced to follow procedures that make them think around issues, insterad of wading in and blasting away with guns.

Yes, we will continue to have tragedies like this but quite frankly, I very much doubt whether it would have been avoided even if they had been carrying firearms and we would probably be reading on a daily basis about innocent bystanders being wounded or or worse if firearms were routinely carried.

if they were both probationary officers why were they on patrol together? I thought this was never supposed to happen. Even so, if the robbery was not reported as 'armed robbery in progress' they would have no way of knowing that the robbers were armed. Someone in the office was arguing that she should have been wearing a bullet proof vest as a matter of every day precaution, but these wouldn't protect anyone from being shot in the head, or in a leg where an artery could be severed. And this would have been just as tragic if it had been a male office, father of five, or not a father of five.
 
I am conflicted on some of this. One of my best friends is a black IRA member, whose family are Jamaican. If he was to revert to military action would he be summarily executed or merely get to stroke the cat?
