Britain At The Bookies

i think the point you make is valid Jinny..and obviously makes sense..one question though?..how on earth can you actually see any variation in size whilst they are walking past you in the parade ring..they just look the same..or similar surely..i haven't tried looking..but i will next time i go.

Just keep lookin'!! No seriously there can be a huge difference - ask any farrier (yes horses DO have shoe sizes!) But its a point worth bearing in mind. Likewise I often look at the size and shape of a horse to see if it will act at the course - somewhere like Brighton, Epsom, even Goodwood is less likely to suit a big, gallumphing great donkey (with the odd exception like Big Orange! ;) ) And as we see year in year out, it takes a very well balanced horse to win the Derby.

yes ..I'm a great believer in horses for courses Jinny..sire stats can tell you a bit in that department...judging horses by looks is like a black art to me..i don't think i'd be very good at it tbh

i admire people that can do that..a great skill imo

FOBTs are too much temptation for the "vulnerable" as evidenced by that guy last night pumping thousands from his burglary money into them.
When I was in my very early teens, my sister worked as a manager of an amusement arcade, the type that had about 30 Bandit machines offering a max of £2 jackpot (I think) This was in a poor area of Cardiff and you had the regulars who were addicted all day, druggies, prostitutes, shop lifters.....straight in there to fill the machines.
The worst sights were the little kids at the door waiting whilst their mothers skunked the benefit money into the machines.
Probably the reason why I've never put any money into Bandits or Casinos thank goodness.

No, of course not H.

but if that's how you think it comes across then I'll happily delete the post and offer my apologies.

I was amazed just how much money (burglary money, as you say) that guy could put into the machine at one go. I agree with you that they are a scourge.

The manager of the new shop really showed how much their 'responsible gambling initiative' is so much hot air - stood by and watched a known problem gambler feed 2.4k into the slot, did nothing until he'd blown the lot, then ejected him for kicking the machine.

I know it's pathetic isn't it?
Did I hear correctly the guy at the end saying he put £1k on a dog with Bet 365 at 8/1?
How on earth did he get that on....or was I dreaming?

I didn't see that bit Harry

My overriding view of Corals though isn't positive from the 3 epsiodes..they dress up why they want to open shops with..we haven't got a shop there..buts its as obvious as nose on your face they are only opening shops up for the FOBT's. I'd love those to be made illegal..then see just how many shops they kept open..i'll wager there would lots of bookie shops closed within 6 months. That main shop in first epsiode..had another one round teh corner..its bloody obvious its only teh FOBT's they have done that for.

its a bit disgusting really...the guy in the first episode..they showed him with no money for a fortnight and some f00kin pasta in a cupbaord..if that was a real character..then surely corals and the other bookies need to really look at the FOBT's and ask themselves..have you got a conscience?

I actually think they should be made illegal..its gambling crack cocaine

The whole 3 programmes to me were grubby TV and make gambling look a totally disgusting industry

Quite agree EC, tip their hat at the regulations yes, OK that's fine .... classic was the way the manager in the shop was saying to customers "Ohh it's gambling Awareness Week this week ....... but don't worry next week there's loads of free bets and promos" sort of immediately dismissing it !

The bet on the dog was £700 and if I heard correctly all he said about the odds was thet they're better than on-course odds, which I saw was 9/4 - looked like it was divvied between 4 of them

Customer Service ad for Coral says pay is £6.54 per hour!
Isnt minimum wage £6.50?
Deputy Manager £7.54?
Awful

Why does that suprise you? Different customers get different limits. Bet365 also has an override system which sends the excess to a trader. I was always laid a decent bet on Irish EPs 5 years ago when they where first up at 8am.

Not really horse racing, but Panorama tonight (BBC1 8.30) could be depressing...

Why are Gambling Machines Addictive?

Wendy Bendel embarks on a highly personal journey to investigate the dangers posed by fixed-odds betting terminals, found in many bookmakers across the UK.

Wendy's partner killed himself after struggling with a 20-year gambling addiction, and in a confessional note, he singled out the high-stakes, high-frequency devices as a key obstacle he longed to overcome, in what would eventually prove to be a losing battle.

Wendy sets out to determine what it is about these betting machines that makes them so addictive, and discovers evidence that suggests they are capable of affecting the brains of long-term gamblers. The billions these terminals are able to generate have divided the gambling industry, and Wendy hears from some former insiders who are now accusing bookies of prioritising profits over the health and wellbeing of their clients.
