There is a part of me through my teenage years that always looked up to this great British woman......

Gearoid - Gail is about 4 foot 10. Exactly what position were you in when you were looking up at her?

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to pick up on Kri's list - I was planning to comment along the same lines as Brian!!!

I'm one of those who "must", I'm afraid, Aunty :P - it's Boudicca for me!! Boudicea was the latinised version of her name, I do believe.

Brian - we women are timeless, you know! I thought the title was a bit meaningless in a way - my lifetime is nearly twice as long as Dom's, so she'd be left with very few 'great' British women within such a short time span. As we've all LEARNED about these women IN our lifetimes, I think it's quite reasonable to discuss them as if they belong to them.

I think you'll agree that's the sort of answer the Iron Lady would've been quite happy to have given?

It's interesting to see that since women were let loose into increasingly male domains, they've evolved from influence in mostly the areas of care, into politics, and then into sport, while keeping a consistent, if not always very high, profile in what can loosely be termed 'the Arts'.

I`ve got to say it makes me piss that these female tennis players want equal prize money at Wimbledon. Wtf is that all about? I think it`s a disgrace that the Aussie and US opens pay the same, they only play THREE fucking sets.

And as for Billy Jean King`s *shudder* argument about them being willing to play five sets, imagine being on centre court awaiting a top class mens match only to have to put up with four sets of lesbionic panting

Female golfers and footballers are way down the money tree compared to men, so why is tennis perceived as being different????

"Lesbionic"? :brows: Surely they at least have to have all human parts?

Guys, perhaps you can keep the chauvy outrage down, and keep on track with the theme? And really, since when have competitors' sexual preferences been an issue? Really, Euro, that's the weakest line of an attempt at an argument I've seen in a long time, you pansy.

I agree with Euro on prizemoney front, purely from a sporting prospective. I know we live in 2006 etc and have to be politically correct etc. But women tennis is a different game to the men. There are really no decent matches until middle of a 2nd week in a Slam. It really dosent matter if they play best of 5 anyway because it will only be an extra set for nearly all of them each round. I dont know what research has shown, but if they find that audience are indifferent to women and men tennis than fair enough, equal prize money. However, if they find that there is a difference, than it will be hard to justify equal prize money for instance attendance for men's matches etc..

Also, there are far worse candidates than PJ Harvey! :) She is a fantastic talent and there is no one out there who is remotely close to her. Her music has certainly had more influence on me than any of the women mentioned above!

If you say so, Brian - I couldn't possibly comment...

Will, what the hell is there 'politically correct' about women earning the same as men for the same job? Why should a woman tennis player or golfer be paid (in prize money) less for a championship than a bloke? She has to attain the same levels of skill, pay exactly the same amount in entrance fees, travel expenses, staff, etc. - you don't see a female sportswoman paying 20% less at the petrol pump because she's female, do you? You may be living in the 21st Century, but you haven't mentally got past 1955 with remarks like those!

Taking golf as an example, the female versions of the Major`s have nowhere near the prize money nor the public interest of the male versions. Unlike tennis these events take place at seperate times. I think it`s fair to say women`s tennis, certainly at the Grand Slam events ride on the coatails of the mens game. If Wimbledon ran the two tournaments seperately does anyone really believe that the punters would be queueing for tickets for the female version? I`d be suprised if a sell out on centre court occured before the semis.

Women do not have to attain the same skill level at tennis to earn a fantastic living, this is because they do not have the same array of opponents. When Navratilova was playing she had two credible opponents, Macenroe in the same era had half a dozen, and had to play best of five sets.

No - equal pay for work of equal value - moreover winning a tennis championship is identical .
