Calling EC1

I've only just read this thread.

I can see Col's point of view and mods are probably always going to have their work cut out for them but I do understand EC1's position. I left here some years ago and managed to avoid posting for a couple of years.

I admit I'm thin-skinned so I can see why some of you might attribute that apparent character flaw to EC1. I have one or two people on ignore and often think about adding one or two more.

I also learned some time ago the more of yourself you give on this forum the more abuse you get, hence I only put up a fraction of my figures, etc. Those who know me beyond the forum know that I have a lot more to offer than I give but I got to the stage of wondering why the fcuk should I bother.

I understand marble's situation too. I became friends away from the forum with another former contributor but it coincided with a spell of personal difficulties and I pushed my friend away because of something someone else said/did. Realising how small-minded I had been, I tried to apologise many times but the damage was done and we've never been in touch since. That is something I will always regret.

But there is no doubt that there are a number of malevolent cyber-bullies still hanging around this forum. Nothing gets done about them because the post might be as apparently innocent as a smiley but everyone knows there's a much more Machiavellian agenda.

We lost An Capall for a while too, don't forget, and Lord H is all too rare a visitor. I was delighted to see Maruco's return too and, by and large, I'm delighted to be back posting myself but I'm much more guarded.

I don't mind admitting that I would happily punch one or two of the people on here in the face if I ever met them in person. Being retired, I can now probably afford to do the jail time. Forums shouldn't really engender that kind of feeling.

I tried the Betfair forum for a week and gave it up as a lost cause. That must be over ten years ago and I'd never go back.

I'm on other forums but this is by far the best-natured - in the big scheme of things - and best-informed.

New posters should always be encouraged as you can never have too much quality. I'd like to suggest that as soon as three for four regulars identify one interloper as a troll then a mod or Col be contacted so that they can investigate.

My advice to EC1 is to take as much time to himself to get this episode out of his system (in the meantime he can email me his winners!!!) and then come back as and when he feels ready. It worked for me.
 
Nice post DO. It is good that people post their own figures and shows hard work and a level of expertise that only a view have.

Differences will always happen, would be no forum if we all agreed, but good to have you posting again and hopefully when best suits him, EC1 returns.

Fair enough. I was coming out of remission from a chronic health condition endured throughout my teens. Yes I've said some horrendous things on several occasions, probally on Neigh, TRF and maybe even on here which were wrong and I fully retract. I'm sure people have said things to me they'd like to retract aswell.

I would like to say though (without making this all about me), that for the most part I think my contributions to forums has been positive, on both politcal/current affairs and horse racing, I think most resonable people can see that. First and foremost I post as an anonymous contributor to a Racing Forum, (though people like Rory know my real name and roughly who I am I suppose), if any friends are to be made then that happens, but I realise what a racing forum is, and making friends is not my first priority.

BTW The day I need a character reference from other people I don't know on an anonymous internet forum will be the death of me. I will not be explaining myself ever again, thats the end as far as I'm concerned. I'll keep posting away when I find the will to...

Your on everyone's ignore list except for mine. And you have never been anything other than nice to me, so no need for you to be banned.
 
I think these type of discussions from time to time are cleansing, a bit like an enema and I am glad Colin stuck the tube in that Froggie creature. (Was he really French?). I have met many smashing people on this and derivative Forums for 15 years, including DO, who is all he says above.

Just for the record though; when I spent a few absent years from here I was living with Krizon in a beach hut in Costa Rica. Lord H would bring us a coconut most mornings.

but you have to take the forum less serioulsly
I have to live in the forum with Ardross advices and even a member of a forum gave a present (t shirt of che guevera) and I am still posting here.

Sorry for snipping the rest of your post, but I agree with most of what you put and thank you.
What you have said above pretty much sums it up though. There are VERY few problems on here, especially when you consider the size of the forum, I would challenge anyone to point to another forum (doesn't have to be a racing forum) with a similar member base (not just in numbers but in regard to being passionate about one subject and as many regular posters), with less problems than we get on here. Similary there are very few specialist forums that have grown in size and popularity over the past 10 years due to the advent of facebook and twitter.

Ultimately though, if everyone agreed with each other the forum wouldn't be here as there would be no discussion. All you would have would be one person saying xxx will win the gold cup, and 100 posts saying yes I agree. When it gets to that point we can go on facebook and just click the like button to save typing anything at all. People have different ways of disagreeing and some can argue a point better than others. No different in the real world, you could be in a bookies and have an hour long discussion with someone about the gold cup, or he could be a total dick and punch you in the face after 30 seconds for saying something he didn't agree with. Not everyone gets on in real life or the internet, the difference is, on a forum people tend to be braver, or, certainly in some cases, something typed can be taken the wrong way. Thats life, but just let it go over your head or ignore it rather than be offended by something a stranger has written.

We do have facebook integration on here, which i had hoped people would use, especially those with a lot of friends into racing, in a bid to attract more members, but it rarely seems to get used.

Hopefully this is over and done with now, but ffs use the report button if you don't like something - that doesn't mean the post will be deleted as it will depend on what it was, if it broke rules etc, but enough reports about teh same post or member and things will be looked at further.

Presumably EC1 will post again as the member who upset him has been banned, unless my posts last night annoyed him to, they weren't meant to but I have to say it how I see it. Every member is valued on here and I think thats reflected in the ban list, which in almost 15 years has less than 30 names on it (which about 10 are all one person). Some people might say the moderation is too lax, I disagree, I think its right, things are done behind the scenes at times that members don't see, and harsh moderation can have a more damaging effect. If I applied the rules as strictly as they are written then I could probably ban 80% of the members if I wanted to.
