Cancer..help.

Due for cataract surgery myself, and my understanding is it's a simple lens replacement with a manufactured one,
Not sure about the shelf life, though, as my mother had the op about 20 years ago, and was able to read newspaper print unaided afterwards. Her sight's gradually gone downhill since, (though she will be 96 next month).

That's interesting, reet. My understanding is that I'm more likely to need reading glasses after a cataract operation.

Yes, I've had two done. The procedure isn't in the least distressing, you will be staggered by the results.

I've been taking Macushield capsules since a Trustmei'madoctor programme said they were proven to improve eye health [and possibly help prevent alzheimers]. Given that they rarely endorse things on the programme I thought I'd throw out all the daft supplements I've been taking for years and just stick with those and flaxseed. Although I alternate the Macushield with a cheaper Boots own brand one which has most of the main ingredients.

I took lutein supplements for long enough but when I mentioned them to the specialist a couple of years ago he shook his head and said there was no evidence that they made any difference. He said the wouldn't do me any harm but he was quite sceptical that they would help prevent any further degenration of the macula.

My next appointment is at the end of next month. I'll mention it again since this is a different consultant I'm seeing. (That's not meant to be an eye joke...)

I can vouch for this; not personally, but from the accounts of family and friends. It's a 'bright, new world' as one remarked

It seems that you can choose the focal point of the new lens, set to long or short sight i.e a choice between reading or driving glasses

Really sorry to hear both of you are having these issues to deal with: best of luck Venusian :)
Giglio: the hospital/clinic would have assigned your Mum a liaison nurse, she/he would be able to help with any questions about anything also. Wishing your Mum all the best.Easy to say but try and stay positive.
