Charlie Hall Chase

A Gawd-awful race - seriously ****. I'll take my chances on Benefficient getting weight and at 13/2, though if SWC sends him on and makes it a test, Long Run will win. Any other tactic, and he's very-much vulnerable, imo.

Better than recent years though Grass? I would call it an intriguing race.

agree with tanlic that long run looks value. only see benefficient as a possible danger.

and it's no worse of a renewal than the last 4 or 5 years to my eye. it's basically a tune-up race for the principals.

Long Run has been running for the bookies since winning the Gold Cup . He was below form today but he look like he doesn't want it anymore.

I don't agree..and i'm no fan of his

he clearly wants a decent test ..this wasn't..we saw that in the KG..this was run too slowly for him..when they kicked he hasn't the speed.

He needs an an end to end gallop if running at 3ish miles on a flat track

it's the first time he's ran like he doesn't want it. he ran his heart out several times last season (none moreso than punchestown, his last race before today) so you might be jumping to conclusions to write him off just yet but i would be surprised to see him win any more grade 1's.

todays race is like dropping an Arc winner back to 6f ...then wondering why he gets outpaced

I agree to an extent, and quite why SWC rode him for a turn-of-foot he doesn't have, is a mystery - same as it was in the Betfair Chase last season.

I'm not convinced with the theory that he turned it in, Ardross.

Long Run was just desperately one-paced, and it's possible that he was a lot less fit than they expected. He had the look of a tired animal to me, because he had jumped just a about as well as I've seen him do in a while for a circuit-and-a-half, until fatigue led to the series of errors in the straight.

To that extent, I think he deserves to be given the benefit of the doubt, but I'm satisfied he can no longer run-up to anything like the form he showed in his KG/GC winning season.....something he has consistently failed to do in all his runs since; falling a long way short of it on most occassions (my view).

It would take a very narrow set of circumstances indeed, to see him in the winner's enclosure again.

He didn't jump the first well. Can't agree about this being like an arc winner over 6f. By that measure he needs 12 miles now or something. Cannot believe he wasn't fit enough either. He hasn't been that much of a stuffy horse in the past and this was a realistic target for him

He should have been able to counter a slightly negative factor or two to not be trailing in behind these.

Agree with much of that, Clive; in 26 previous races, he's never been out of the first 3 and never beaten more than 13l - regardless of pace or distance.

Agree with the fact that he looks a tired horse
Would it maybe be to do with the fact that hes being basically on the go since he was a 3yr old?
Does anyone else know of any horses that are still at the top of there game as a 9 or 10yr old when they were running in grade 1 chases as a 4yr old? Genuine question.

Didn't know that reet, although aware he's usually close whatever happens. I think that's pretty significant
