Cheltenham 2026

A change from the settled weather is in store at Cheltenham on Thursday when racing switches to the New course, where the ground is good, good to soft in places.

Strong winds and rain are forecast throughout the afternoon, with a heavier band coming in after racing and into Gold Cup day on Friday.

Officials watered the course overnight to maintain conditions for the day three card, which is headlined by the Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle (3.20) and Ryanair Chase (4.00).

Clerk of the course Jon Pullin said: "We did some watering last night, putting down 3-5mm. The forecast is mainly dry this morning but potentially with some drizzle, with rain moving in from lunchtime. The heavier rain comes predominantly after racing, through the evening and into tomorrow."

Although Cheltenham does not sit within the yellow weather warning further north, strong gusts of around 40-45mph are forecast during the afternoon action.

"We'll have to keep an eye on the wind during the afternoon, it's a south south-westerly, which is nearly head-on in the home straight," said Pullin.

"We have extra support on the wings and we've raced in those conditions before. It just depends on the direction and things like that, so we'll continue to monitor."

Given the forecast, conditions are likely to ease for Friday, although the forecast for the final day is mainly dry during racing.

"We're looking at 5-10mm potentially through late afternoon and into tomorrow and then it clears during the early hours and into the morning and it should be a mainly dry afternoon," Pullin added.
The ground has eased - they've had 12mm rain since yesterday.

Getting a bit peeved about these block entries by Mullins - how do you pick that out?
Didn't realise they changed the rules from last year about horses must have run over hurdles after last year.
