Cheltenham Going

Good/soft Good in places will put the fear of God into the O'Connell's, owners of Un De Sceaux. Said before he might not run if it was anything better than g/s.

Does anyone know how a current going stick reading of 6.2 on the scale is classified as good/soft ground when a reading of 6.4 last year, was classified as heavy.

Good/soft soft in places is up around the 7.0 mark as shown above on the 1st day of last years festival so a current reading of 6.2 would surely mean slower ground than what they're officially putting out there.

Unsettled with rain at times.

Claise is contractually obliged to use the words 'good' and 'soft' a minimum of 17 times when describing the ground to any member of the press in the month of March.

Going sticks are erroneous.

Thanks DG. That reading would be more consistent with good/soft ground. Still just slightly on the slower side. The initial reading was a lot closer to soft tho that good/soft.

Nice bit of rain due in tonight from 10pm. The one thing Claisse is right about is how often the forecast changes.

True, and as I said we really wont get a picture of the true state of the ground until after the Supreme. I have a feeling it will be on the softer side of good/soft with the threat of rain and slight frosts in forecasts.

GoingStick Old: 6.7 Cross country: 7.3 New: 6.8 on Tuesday at 13:00
Weather:
4 mm of rain Tues/Weds, mostly dry to the weekend when light rain expected 3 to 5 mm.

If it helps Eddie, I put my finger in the air today and it said it should be largely dry with possibly a small shower at the weekend, and rain would arrive late on Thursday, and then an overcast day and a chance of a shower on Friday. It also said it would be quite mild during racing and that Dave would be wearing three buttons down on his shirt on Wednesday with his David Gray shades, and Simon Claisse would call the first day good to soft.

The first bit of all that is apparently a 10/1 shot, whilst that other two are 1/10 shots.

I just contacted the racecourse to point out the going report hasn't been updated today, this was their response

"hello, this is the current going. Good to soft Mostly dry outlook with a little light rain on Sunday."

4 days before our biggest race meeting of the year and no going stick readings, no nothing

Further message

"the next update is tomorrow, we are not required to update every day or at this point."

Is this really the best they can do four days before a major festival ?

Just looked to see if a report had issued today and found they'd added one late yesterday Friday which was just a copy of the report posted earlier in the week, and including Tuesday's going stick reading
