Christmas Racing Quiz

Niklas Angel being that first winner ridden by Richard Quinn & trained by Conrad Allen.

Not sure if we were meant to be posting answers on the thread until nearer the time that it ends.

Don't see why people shouldn't post answers, it was just for a bit of fun really and just something I cooked up last night when it became clear that there wouldn't be any racing today. Number two the clue was in the phrase "last public appearance" rather than "last race" and it's clear plenty have cracked it.

It's probably not an easy quiz as for most of the questions you'll either know the answer straight away or be left guessing, but the quiz was set up not to be an exercise in googling and I think in most cases the answers are fairly well-known people or horses - the answers to 6, 12 and 18 are all very big names, for instance.

Okey dokey..

2.Galileo Aidan O'Brien Southwell (racecourse gallop)
Galileo Tom George Worcester was why I thought W.

8.)Mick Easterby
11.)All rode their first winner for Martin Pipe (Lungo rode Pipes first winner)
15.) Featured on CH4 last weekend, the Ffitch Heyes trained Manhattan Boy
16.)John Spearing (Rapid Lad & Run & Skip I think are the horses).
5 & 20 already answered correctly

Not to mention a group one winnning sprinter in third as well.

Couldn't imagine 25 runners in a Derby these days (not sure what the safety limit is but doubt it is that high).

well, I was trying not to give away the answer Chris!! I agree, it was easy - but for those of us that are involved to the level that we'd know that

Cochrane can't be the answer to Question 3.

He was Nagwa's jockey when she won a string of two-year-old races in 1975.

For that question "under Rules" could be replaced by "over jumps", as it was the first winner of Cochrane's career as a jump jockey, having switched codes due to weight issues.

9. Jim Joel
18. Michael Stoute
19. Little Polveir.
That's a horrible thing to say about Little Polveir!! It was a much less worthy contender, as suggested by form figs, but I think I can give a clue here. There is a strong connection between 19 and one of the other answers.

I didn't read the question correctly. I read it as "which horse won the National...." as opposed to "which horse ran in the National...". If we are dealing with a horse who merely lined up at Aintree I wouldn't have a clue.

You've picked the correct race, if that helps!

Hugh Taylor's Christmas Quiz
23 Dec 2010

Many thanks to the huge number of viewers who submitted answers to Hugh Taylor's 2010 Christmas Quiz. Congratulations go to Timeform's Rory Delargy, who was the only person to get all 20 correct, whilst Mickey Harris scored 19 and Paul Dallibar recorded a very respectable 16. Full results, with explanations for each answer, are below:
1. A Newbury maiden in the last 30 years saw a future Derby winner and a future Champion Hurdle winner both finish outside the first ten. Name the two horses.
Make A Stand was 11th and Erhaab 12th behind Pencader in a 7f maiden on 14th August 1993, both horses were making their second start.
2. At which English racecourse did Galileo make his last public appearance on this side of the Atlantic before retiring?
The clue was the phrase “last public appearance” (and not “last race”) — Galileo, Mozart and Black Minnaloushe all went for a pre-Breeders’ Cup gallop at Southwell in October 2001, the gallop was open to the public and attracted a fair crowd.
3. Which current TV pundit rode his first winner under Rules in August 1977 on Wanlockhead?
Ray Cochrane’s first winner on the Flat came in 1974 — but his first winner under Rules was at Newton Abbot on Wanlockhead.
4. Which jockey’s two rides in Britain in 1983 saw him pick up a ban in the Derby and then get disqualified from second place in the Champion Stakes?
Gianfranco Dettori (Frankie’s father) picked up the ban on Tolomeo, having been held responsible for the incident that caused Yawa to unseat its rider, and he was again disqualified (from second place) when riding Tolomeo in the Champion Stakes.
5. What significant event took place at 11am on 30th October 1989?
This was the first AW race run in this country, a 1m claimer at Lingfield, won by Niklas Angel, trained by Conrad Allen and ridden by Richard Quinn.
6. In 1969 Bill O’Gorman rode the first career winner for which Aberdeen-born trainer?
Celestial Cloud, ridden by O’Gorman in the Newby Maiden Stakes for amateur riders at Ripon, was the first winner for Aberdeen-born Henry Cecil.
7. In the late 1980s a sprinter owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum won nine races at Lingfield. Name the horse and his trainer.
The horse was Al Amead and the trainer was CJ (John) Benstead.
8. Which Northern trainer won a Classic, three major sprints and also had a Cheltenham Festival winner within the space of 18 months in the 1970s?
Mick Easterby won the 1976 July Cup, Kings Stand Stakes and William Hill Sprint, all with Lochnager, the 1976 Triumph Hurdle with Peterhof, and the 1977 1000 Guineas with Mrs McArdy.
9. Which owner won the 1000 Guineas in the 1940s, the Derby in the 1960s and the Grand National in the 1980s?
Jim Joel won the 1944 1000 Guineas (Picture Play), the 1967 Derby (Royal Palace) and the 1987 Grand National (Maori Venture).
10. Which Middleham trainer who died in 1984 has a race named in his memory at Thirsk?
The Dick Peacock Sprint Handicap has been run in May at Thirsk since the year after his death.
11. What do trainers Tom Dascombe, Rod Millman and former trainer Len Lungo have in common (the answer should include a now-retired trainer’s name)?
They all rode winners for Martin Pipe.
12. Former William Hill PR David Hood rode the second-ever runner saddled by which well-known trainer in a Huntingdon novice hurdle in 1987?
The David Hood-ridden Rosie Oh finished fourth in a Huntingdon novice hurdle and was the second-ever runner for Mark Johnston.
13. Who is the only trainer to have achieved the feat of 1000 winners both on the Flat and over jumps?
Peter (MH) Easterby trained 1000 winners under both codes.
14. Who turned down the offer to ride as Sheikh Mohammed’s first jockey in 1993?
Michael Kinane, though he did make an agreement to ride for the Sheikh in big races less than a year later.
15. Which horse won 14 races at Plumpton in the late 1980s/early 19990s, including one selling handicap hurdle five times, but never won anywhere else?
Manhattan Boy was the Plumpton selling specialist, winning the Peacehaven Selling Handicap Hurdle five times; he’s not to be confused with the possibly more talented, but patently less interesting German-bred horse of the same name currently with Edward O’Grady.
16. Which now-veteran trainer saddled a horse that won 12 times at Beverley and a Welsh National winner?
John Spearing trained Beverley specialist Rapid Lad and Welsh National winner Run ‘N Skip.
17. Full Circle Thoroughbreds bought a horse to run in the Grand National for a reported six-figure fee, but he won only an amateur riders’ race at Thirsk — name the horse.
Darkorjon’s poor jumping put an end to his National aspirations, and he was hastily replaced in that role by Monanore, who ran a blinder to finish 4th in the 1988 National. Darkorjon’s sole win for Full Circle came under Anthea Farrell at 20-1in a Thirsk amateurs’ event.
18. The six people short-listed for the position of BBC TV racing correspondent in November 1965, all of whom were asked to commentate on a race at Newbury as part of their interview, included two future trainers. One was Gavin Pritchard-Gordon, name the other.
Sir Michael Stoute was the future trainer passed over for this position; the post was awarded to Julian Wilson
19 Which horse in the last 30 years ran in the Grand National having refused at Plumpton, unseated rider at Plumpton, fallen at Folkestone and unseated rider at Lingfield that same season?
Hettinger was the horse in question in 1989, falling at the sixth, and he had also fallen at the first in 1988; he was something of a cause celebre at the time, holding claims in many people’s eyes to be the most unsuitable National runner of modern times given his poor completion rate at gaff tracks.
20. What do former jockeys Nicky Adams, Sashi Righton and Sam Stronge have in common?
All three are now jockeys’ agents

Rory - stunning stuff, but pretty embarrassing if you'd only got 5! Well done - we look forward to hearing your prize acceptance speech on ATR. I love the answer to 18 - imagine Stoutey instead of the spookily wispy Wilson!

Me and a work colleague won a couple of tickets to the Gold Cup through the Xmas quiz a couple of years ago.
Unless your name is Delargy I don't believe you can get all the answers without a degree of googling.
