Clement Freud R.I.P.

Having slept on it,

I dealt with him fairly extensively in two jobs Andy - and he was thoroughly unpleasant. I take your point about speaking ill of the dead but so far as I can see him being dead doesn't change the fact that he was a nasty character in life - dying didn't turn Hitler into a lamb, did it?

As always, I speak as I find. As Jinnyj says, I'm sure that I am not the only one who feels the same and I'm sure plenty of racehorse trainers will have raised a glass on hearing the news.
:<3:That's what I like about you "Shadow", as you know I,m the same, however as years have gone by I have found some things are best left unsaid but the place would not be the same without you,:D
PS. Knowone likes loosing do they,
RIP.

"I can think of one former Prime Minister for instance who all things being equal has to die one day (surely?) "

I love the "(surely?)"....

Whether or not this person has any humanity is a moot point, but yes, I think they ARE mortal like the rest of us! :D

I wonder what odds they are on Death List, I must go check.... :ninja:
If that's Mrs Fly I may have to break my golden Rule:o

Maybe what makes such strong characters so noticeable is that they are not afraid to show their unpleasant sides? Just an observation.

The issue is whether its really necessary, and whether she hasn't already said enough and continuing to hammer home the message now serves any real purprose.

Given its overall place in the scheme of things there is almost nothing that could be said on this forum that would count as being necessary. A fairer test is whether a statement, discordant or uncomfortable though it might be, has any basis.

As you suggest, SL is probably not alone in her views on this matter. Reading between the lines of some of the articles about him would tend to confirm it.

Hamm, I'm frankly amazed at the amount of comments posted on here about how sad it is, how he'll be missed, yada yada. Mother Theresa he wasn't yet you'd be forgiven for thinking he was on his way to sainthood reading some of these posts!

I'm not at all disagreeing with you SL (I have little opinion on CF myself).

I just think if someone posts a topic with the title 'CF RIP', then I think that topic is not really the place for negative comments.

Ps, none of this is as a mod :)

And let the enemies speak ill of a man who is hours dead if they want.
But this is just a forum Gal, as mentioned by you on the My Way De Solzen thread?

We can all see where this is going - i.e who is the evil one a) Shadow Leader b) Sir Clement Freud.

Unfortunately, I think in the real world, when you get praise heaped upon him like he has, there's always someone who feels a obligation to add balance to the debate about greatness and historical standings.

tbh I think this thread might end up into one about "did Sir Clement make it to heaven" etc.

TBH as someone who thinks there's more important things in the world i'd like to move on.

Well he made me laugh.

And knowing that he pissed off SL has made me chuckle a bit too. I noticed in Brough Scott's piece on Saturday that he alluded to a string of sacked secretaries.

Was Dom one of them? I think the forum needs to know!

I can just imagine it?

"Now if you can just take this down my dear..."

PS: Welcome back Krizon....

Think you'll find she was working as secretary for Charlie Egerton at the time and it was Freud who was eventually told to sling his hook as an owner from the yard not Dom.

Just in case anyone was thinking otherwise

Hi, Simmo! Lovely to see so many historic names still on here!

There won't be much wailing and gnashing of dentures among the elderly gatemen at Royal Ascot, I wager. One of them, a sweet old boy, possibly mistaking Freud for a freshly dug-up Toulouse-Lautrec, had the temerity to ask to see his badge, as he tottered into the Royal Enclosure. Without even turning to look at him, Sir Clem hissed "F*ck off!" and shoved past him. Charm? Not a lot!

It's becoming increasingly apparent from the obits I'm picking up on that Dom might well be in the majority view on this one. There seems to be as bad words said about him as good, and even those who try to heap praise on him seemed forced to concede an unpleasent side to the man

Not to get too involved, but the sycophancy shown by the post towards him is a little sick inducing; it would behove them better to at least add a few opinions about his difficult side in order to provide balance. We don't need to speak ill of the dead, but when absolutely everyone seems to be publishing paeans of praise, someone has to be brave enough to stand up and say "eh?"

Ironically, one of the gushing tributes in the Post included a bit about him asking opinions about a well known trainer before opining blandly:

"the man is a c**t"

Given his legendary sense of humour and love of profanity, he'd surely much prefer it if he was remembered in similar fashion. So, farewell then Clem, you miserable f*cker! ;)
