Congratulations to the Royal Couple

Clive,

I hate to break this to you but Le Matin is a nothing newspaper - it is like saying the baby is news in England as it is on front page of the Twickenham Times! And it's swiss. DIrect Matin is French.

I disagree with this.
In truth, there is overwhelming indifference to the birth amongst non-British people. A couple of dozen foreign press-photographers hanging around outside the Lindo wing doesn't underwrite anything, nor does a few hundred tourists at a loose end in London. SKY TV read it otherwise, of course, inferring that it is an event of huge global interest. Hype, in its purest form.

Maybe so.

The challenge to the suggestion that the UK is somehow 'backward' due to the existence of a Monarchy still stands though.

Clive,

That is not the front page of the newspaper - you have clicked through into the international section of the website.

It doesn't amaze me anyone is interested in it considering the popularity of reality TV everywhere but I think its weird the royal family are so popular in britain when you consider what that class of people think of the ordinary brit.

The rise in popularity of the Monarchy is directly proportional to the rise in distrust the public have of their public servants.

I believe this to be an undeniable fact.

Serious question - and Clive, please don't answer it in daily mail tones - why do you think the royal family has survived so long in Britain (especially compared with France)?

when you consider what that class of people think of the ordinary brit.

i dont defend the aristocracy at all and many are charmless but does the queen have a record of slagging off and looking down the nose at the "ordinary brit" ?

Dont think so...

Hamm

Because the royal family adapted here many moons ago and devolved substantial powers to parliament. Practically all of them. britain was ahead of the rest of the world at that time in implementing rights and democracy.

the french royal family did not. It was very feudal to the bitter end

why do you think its survived so long in sweden ?

The British royal family are huge news abroad. Well not exactly news, but they're up there with Hollywood actors and entertainers. The pages of every language edition of Hello/Ola/Paris Match will be filled with them for months to come.

On the basis that Alexander is my name I also took this name, but also like Louis at 15s.

Then I took myself out the back and gave myself and good ******* kicking.

******* bastards. Dirty, dirty ******* German fuckwad fucksuckers. Cuntfucking wankbastards.

Yes but as soon as Harry was born it was announced that he would be known as Harry. If William/George and other offspring die, he wouldn't be known as King Harry, it would be Henry if he chose to stick with his first name. They haven't said George will be known as Sandy.
