Tomorrow at Newcastle a horse called Anglican, a veteran of 39 races in France, makes its English debut in the novice hurdle at 3.10.

Anglican already has 11 runs over hurdles in France, the first of them in 2004. Is it the fact that he is still a maiden at this discipline that makes him eligible for tomorrow's race? Or is there some other explanation?

That would be the one Grey, should state something along the lines of "not won a hurdle race of any description prior to 1st May 2007" or sometime around then.

He could run in 200 hurdles but if he hasn't won one he'll still be a novice for this season.
