Dangerous Dogs Act

You have to ask whether it is pure coincidence that St Helens police have now raided illegal breeders and other sites in the area and seized a number of pit bulls bred for fighting. Another modern use for the pit bull terrier is as a guardian of drugs dealers. The little girl's uncle has convictions for dealing.
Yes according to the BEEB 24HR NEWS @11am the POLICE have taken 6 of these dogs in ST HELENS area alone ....

But how if they are a banned breed were they allowed to get them and keep them??? makes one wonder about the standards like I posted at the start of this thread.....

Another problem with these big strong dogs is that people who don't know them are nervous of them. Dogs pick up on nervousness within people fairly quickly and can interpret it as a danger sign, resulting in a preemptive strike (as Mr Bush might say).

Through my puppy classes I'm happy to advise any potential purchaser of a puppy what to look for to best suit their circumstances re breed or even 'rank' as all puppies have a rank within their litter, some being easier to train that others - the 'runt' isn't always poorly or sick, it may just be lower ranking, and therefore possibly more easy for a novice owner to train - it varies.

Merls - I'm pretty sure the guy has squealed on the suppliers of these unfortunate animals which were destined for fighting pits. I hope whoever bred his dog, which was only a year old, can be arrested on some sort of charge - doing something which has led to an unlawful killing, or whatever the term might be. In other words, as if you sold a handgun illegally to someone who then accidentally killed someone with it. Don't see this as any different, myself.

Dragging this one up again as today is the start of Merseysides police seven day amnesty on illegal dogs whereby anybody owning an illegal breed or 'type' can hand their dog over without fear of prosecution. I suspect the only dogs who will be signed over and killed will be the much loved family pets of scared and innocent folk. You cannot just take your dog to the police station, you have to contact them and arrange for them to collect it from your home, and of course drug dealers and those involved in dog fighting are bound to invite the law into their homes aren't they? And the amnesty is only for illegal dogs and their 'type', it does not include other dogs that are known to be dangerous or vicious, so it's not actually targeting those dogs who are indeed dangerous and likely to attack.

I don't know if there any members living in the Merseyside area but it is worth them and indeed anybody who owns a dog who could be interpreted as a pit bull type dog knowing their rights and the things they should and should not do if they are approached by the police. DeedNOTBreed have an excellent site here

DeedNOTBreed would like to make local dog owners aware of the following:

You are under no legal obligation to hand over dogs under the Amnesty. If you do, and your dog is of type, IT WILL BE DESTROYED.

If you do not hand over your dog under the amnesty and it is later seized, you are under no legal obligation to sign seized dogs over for destruction.

If you don’t sign your dog over, you have the right to fight through the courts to save your pet’s life by proving that he or she poses no threat to the public. 1000 dogs have been registered this way since the act came out.

Even the Kennel Club advised Merseyside police not to have an amnesty as they too recognised it would not make the area any safer and the only thing to come from it would be the deaths of innocent dogs. I dread to think how many are going to die needlessly this week.

Won't do any good as you say Griffin, particularly when I can point to at least two popular music video's (popular as in apparently good songs and influencing the youth of today) which feature "pitbull like" dogs.

When I opened up the thread I thought it was a discussion of a scene in the Forum play that AC mentioned in his Shakespeare thread.

The act starring Krizon and Shadow Leader.
:D Quoted so no editing.
