Debatable this deserves it's own thread most years but it definitely does in 2023 judging by both the entries and the prospect of a decent ground flat meeting for a change. Just had the one bet so far but plenty of mouth watering races to look at.
Wed:
The opening handicap, the Jorvik, is usually a good race and this looks up to scratch. Israr tops the weight and Old Harrovian looks off a nice mark for Balding. I'll back Crystal Delight if he gets in.
I can't remember a better looking Duke of York at this stage. Highfield Princess heads the market despite the penalty and she's totally respected but Marshman's entry is fascinating. Three year old's rarely run in this (two in the last decade, both finished runner-up) and Burke's horse is likely high class. Not sure I'd back him but his York form is good and I have backed Noble Style for the Commonwealth so wouldn't mind a form boost.
Musidora hopefully will have a full field.
Thur:
Good sprint opens the card and I note that c/d winner Korker has been dropped to 100. Could be interesting
Free Wind vs Sea Silk Road is a good match-up in the Middleton
The Hambleton has an intense entry list at this stage - honestly can't remember a more appetising one in recent memory. Reach for the Moon top weight, Awaal, Brunch, Atrium, Wanees, Lattam. Really good race, Atrium is interesting off his current mark.
Wouldn't have a bet in the Dante but obviously a hugely important race this year with the Derby looking so open.
Fri:
Doesn't look quite as good on the last day but the 10f handicap is interesting.
The Yorkshire Cup like the Duke of York is an elite running and provides my only bet of the week ante-post. I think Siskany is a wild price at 6/1 and the market looks wonky for me - I can't have Quickthorn at the top of such a strong race and Elgar Eldorov fto carrying a penalty is too short as well. I'd have this between Broome and Siskany honestly and with a small weight pull from Meydan prefer the Godolphin horse.
